We are moving up to Seoul in March and are trying to decide whether or not to just get a cell phone and forget about a land line.

Anybody work with just a cell phone? What about getting a high speed connection at home, will we need a land line for that?

i have just a cell phone. never bothered to get a land line hooked up.
as for the internet if you get highspeed internet than it willl come through dsl line or cable not the phone line.

Same for me. No home phone. Only a handphone co-signed by my Korean friend.

A land-line is only good if you plan on calling other land-lines. It's much cheaper in that case, but you have to figure that there is indeed a monthly cost too. If you plan on using it for phone teaching, then get a land-line for that.

My internet is brought through a cable wire that's different from my TV cable wire. Last year, they used the same wire. Depends on what company you go with, and they'll run a cable for you if you don't have the right one, regardless.

I have both. I had a card phone but decided to see what happened if I tried to buy a phone and get service. No problem. Bought the low end CYON phone. No camera. Paid for it...got the service and get billed all I needed was my registration card. Did this at 7 p.m. by 7:30 I had new cell phone service in my own name. Has number ID and as you add numbers and names it is just like caller ID. Totally cool as I can access internet and all the other goodies which I don't do cuz it is expensive. My phone bill for last month was 23,000 won. I downloaded some new rings for christmas.

I have a land line also cost 60,000 won to set up. I cannot make long distance calls outside Korea without using a card. Easy enough about once every 3 months I get my KTF card charged and I am good to go.

I did not have a single problem getting either. I did them both on my own had my registration card and address of the place I worked and there didn't seem to be any big deal.

No land line. My computer is hooked up with DSL. I use a cellphone.

A few years ago I had both a land line and a cellphone. I exclusively only used the cellphone - as I could use text messaging and was out of the house all of the time. I had an answering machine on my landline, but everyone left messages on the cellphone. In fact the one time I got a call on my landline it really startled me.

Anyhow, now I have no landline and just use DSL and cellphone.

Only landline would mean you'd miss all the calls when you're online as well as when you're out of the house.

Well, if you do decide to get a land line going, I have two teleophones lying around here. Whoever wants them can grab them (because, you know, land lines are so, like, eighties...ah...!).

get them both rudy - if yu (like me) often make overseas calls using a phone card, then a land line is much cheaper than your cell phone. its also cheaper for yr overseas contacts to call yu on the landline.

i have both and i would not do without them. the landline is so cheap to run. it is also useful if yu have someone else at your house so yu can phone them. i have a large family in australia and they often visit me - so i actually have two handphones and a landline - and they are all in use at the moment.

From a payphone, or any phone, it's cheaper for me to call my relatives in the USA using a calling card than it is to call almost anyone in Korea via handphone or landline.

Go figure.

Just be sure you get one of the calling cards that dials a toll-free number, so you aren't getting charged by the minute for the call off of the payphone though.

I usually call home via computer and an internet phone service though. Costs maybe 3 cents per minute, I think.

I have only a cell phone and see no reason to get a land line as the interet is not dial-up. Just keep the phone charged so you are not without when you need it. Unless you make many calls from home, I don't think a land line would save money either.
