Mokpo is a hell hole, at least as portrayed in Korean film.

Pfff, people who don't like Itaewon don't have to try hard to avoid it. It's only on one subway line, right? Hardly a big transfer area! As for me, I like going there for a few cute shops (Kim's Boutique, which is also in Hyehwa) and some cheap bars- Orange Tree has 3K red wine!

Also, a lot of the Western art scene happens to be there. Seoul City operates from Itaewon, as do many of the gigs of Stand-Up Comedians: Korea. Why not drink cheap beers and hang out with foreigners? It's not so bad.

I like the Mexican food in Sinchon better, the Indian food in Dongdaemun better, and the bars in Hyehwa better. But sometimes I enjoy a lot of people speaking English in one place. I'm glad it's there- and easy to avoid. Smile

As I'm out in g-do, I know I can talk to a interesting stranger any day of the week in Itaewon. You don't go to Hongdae, or Gangnam alone.

Very, very true.

B1, BricX, Above, Bungalow, Gecko's Garden, Baby Guiness, 3 Alley, Zelen, My Thai, Bonji, Loca Loco (??) etc.,

vs.

Gecko's Terrace, Nashville, Seoul Pub, UN Club, the Loft, bars on the hill, etc.

i dig the itae...

i like getting persian and arab food. ok french and thai food. i like going to a bar and having a less than normal chance at fighting with a nationalist korean that doesnt like foreigners.

i like going with a korean girl and getting fewer than normal crazy looks.

its the only place i can buy clothes and i get so many taylored these days for the amount of use i get out them, the price is worth it.

i like being able to buy tourist stuff every now and then.

i like having a bank and a travel agent in the same town that speak near fluent english.

i like getting good mexican food (chili chili rox my sox)

i like meeting new people from all over the world

...i'm from a state in the southern united states. thats as specific as im gonna get.

i like "what the book" and if u dont, u can suck it.

i like having two foreign food marts within a few minutes of each other. so i can buy oatmeal, good curry mix, and other foreign/western foods i miss from time to time.

Did you mean to post that on this thread or here http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=151548? Wink

I'm from Michigan and I love/hate Itaewon, depending on my mood and, yes, the side of the street. If I'm in a mood to be a dirty disgusting drunk, I go to the Seoul Pub side of the road. If I feel like grabbing a nice dinner and bottle of wine with a date, then it's behind the hotel.
Still, no matter where you go, there's still always going to be that Itaewon feel in the air. Some kind of existential emptiness. I heard once that the Japanese had a base there back in their days and perhaps a precursor to the US one. The Japanese base was often used for beating and torturing, so the story goes. Not sure if it's true. Anyone else ever hear this? Maybe they left behind some bad ju-ju. Even if all the hookers and drunks were gone, seems Itaewon would still feel like Itaewon.

Sounds like you went to New York, went to times square, had a hot dog, bought a statue of liberty key chain and called it a day.

East New York is not your "New York, New York" nor is the Bronx (mostly south because of the projects), queensbridge, or brownsville. I've heard harlem, even though has been "cleaned up", is still not safe but I've never been so I can't say.

New York is far from glitter glitter. Some parts are yes, but even the clubs in times square go to the bathrooms and you'll find people snorting up lines.
Glitter glitter and snorting lines go hand and hand.

itaewon is fine by day, creepy by night. no matter how much you hate it, you always end up there again. good food and good shopping are its good points. the sewer smell is its big down point. but a lot of seoul smells like sewer when it rains.

It's a shithole! I'll be glad to see the military leave there.

I'm from Mississippi. I like Itaewon just fine. It's places like Gangnam and Apgujeong that I don't much care for.

sometimes its nice to be around westerners. if I want to be isolated I can just hang around Nowon.

It's dirty and sometimes unsafe and full of drunk people. Most fun places for young adults are. Reminds me of the old New Orleans (pre-apocalypse), which was great.

Bottom line, stay out, or just get over yourself and come have a few drinks with those of us who happen to be comfortable and confident enough to enjoy it for what it is.

This man has his head screwed on right.

Good shopping for Western products, great assortment of restaurants and meeting people whose first question is NOT "What's your favorite Korean food?"

Put in the context of the other holes I've seen, Itaewon is far from the degraded slum some people make it out to be

Actually, I've found much better places to shop, along with better food elsewhere.
I've always headed there for a good meal then left, but I've recently found a few spots that really outdo the Itaewon places on food as well so there's no longer any reason for me to go there now. Very Happy

It's the kind of place everyone should (and pretty much does) visit and form their own opinion of. A lot of people can't stand it, others worship the place.

Just check it out for yourself and see what happens. If you like it, great. If not, Seoul's a huge city and you can find other places to suit you.
