well, no one's mentioned it so far so here goes - I've been suggesting to my students for some years now they go to Itaewon w/their parents so they can hear more E spoken, eat in a non-K restaurant, or see more foreigners.
I get mixed reactions, some have never heard of it, others don't say much. To be truthful, I didn't know Itaewon had such a terrible reputation among Ks but am not that surprised really.
I do know in the 60's there were bars that were closed to Ks except for the hookers. The bars were only for the American GIs and the prostitutes who worked there. don't know when that changed but I know a K photog who did a documentary about it; he showed his photos to me.
I don't think I'll ever forget the looks on those women's faces; how absolutely hopeless they seemed to be. |

Please please please show us these photos if you can--I would LOVE to see them. I'd love to see about Itaewon back in the day...it's a fascinating part of Korea's past. |

Crazy eh? Inbetween the transgender hookers walking about, gay bars, rowdy soldiers, slutty girls looking for action, dark alley ways, sleezy clubs, drug dealing nigerians, russian sailors, and beggars....I totally think itaewon could be the next "Children's Grand Park" of Seoul..... |

I really haven't seen drugs in Itaewon. Mind you I go there only for the doctor. I've been once to a club and met a group of really cool black guys. No, I don't care if they're black, but apparently they tend to be the ones with the dope. We even talked about it for a bit.
So where are these drugs hiding? I find it hard to believe that it's so easy to get drugs there. I'm sure it's not like in Toronto where I can walk up to someone and ask where I can get some dope. |

Where are the drugs? They're with stupid candians who smoke pot with 19 year old K girls and Dumb A koreans who post how to grow info with pictures of their grow op on their blog which is monitored by korean law enforcement.
No buying drugs in ROK is not like in Toronto where buying drugs is easy because getting caught with drugs is not a big deal. You have to really know the dumb of the dumb to get drugs in korea. The idiots that advertise on the net and tell their co-teachers they smoke dope and, of course, the morons who ignore the stiff penalty here.

Actually Madison's much nicer.  In general though, Minneapolis is just likable. As diverse and interesting as a real big city, without the danger or high cost of living. And Minnesota has about the closest thing to universal health care that you can get in my sorry-ass home country. (Other than Vermont of course, which actually has universal health care.)
I agree with the OP--- if the Twin Cities weren't so Siberia-cold in the winter, I'd strongly consider moving back there, especially now that St. Paul is hiring uncertified teachers with four year degrees in any field, same as Korea.
(I also agree with the OP that St. Paul is a nicer place to live than Uptown--- but it can't beat Minneapolis when it comes to ethnic food and night life.) |

the photos don't belong to me - how am I suppose to show them to anyone?
for that matter - chances are they'll never be shown here or not at least in the near future - you can draw your own conclusions as to why not. |

Yes, at one time (and not that long ago) some Itaewon establishments had no unaccompanied Korean rule. So, if you came with your lady friend or wife it was okay. I think Nashvilles was famous for this. King Club might have been that way too but the King Club was always full of a special kind of lady.
These days Itaewon is chock full of Koreans - many of them couples - who enjoy the restaurants and a few of the bars and clubs. I would say today there might be more Koreans in Itaewon on a Saturday then there are non-Koreans.
It is completely generational. Many young Koreans have a completely different view of Itaewon than the older generation for obvious reasons.
I would say except for the prostitution, the level of danger in Itaewon is much, much lower than any major city in America. And, the prostitution is mostly confined to one back street which no one has to walk through to get to anything important. |

BS, If he were worried he would say he was worried about you DOING drugs. That implies that all foreigners can't help but do drugs when they're around. That's racist. Full stop.
If he was worried, he'd say, I'm worried about your health/safety. Or I'm worried that cocaine will be forced up your nose by the other filthy foreigners, you filthy foreigner. |

Do you have any further information on this in St. Paul? I've tried looking over their education sites and can't find anything about this. |

itaewon is okay on weekdays when it's bright out, but on weekend nights it looks like a scummy mardi gras
a lot of the restaurants there seem overrated and overpriced
but I do have several favorites |
