I've been noticing YMCA volunteers show up at my school who are based in Chuncheon who claim to be working for free doing after school classes. One is American and another is Phillipino. They are not on E-2 visa.
The American claims to have been in Korea for several years off and on and receives a small stipend, room to stay in, Korean food, and a flight. I'm kinda confused why he doesn't go for an E-2 visa job to get paid. He said he likes to do it just for the cultural experience and to travel.
These volunteers also teach camps too.
Why would you volunteer in Korea since Korea is a reasonably wealthy developed country offering paying jobs with benefits? Might they be kids from wealthy families just out to live and work for fun since they don't need the money?
If I could afford to live without a salary as a volunteer, I might would go to a 3rd world country to get to know another culture and do something for those most in need. I'm betting it would be highly rewarding to volunteer in an under developed country vs. a developed country.
What's the scoop on YMCA volunteering English teachers in Korea? I always knew of YMCA as operating fitness gyms and use to offer rooms to those in need back home. |

I don't know about this program in particular, but many people jump at the chance to see another country, even if they don't earn much. The experience is what matters to them, not the money.
I'm not sure why you're confused about it since he told you why he was doing it. I would guess he likes the freedom and personal satisfaction that comes with volunteering, rather than being tied to a job and contract. |

People need to learn that the institutions they volunteer for in Korea still make money from them. They are not helping anything other than someone's bank balance. They would do just as well to take a paid job :/
Korea is not Africa. |

Hahahah could very well be true. OP do these people have their BA? I know a student from a community college who thought he was really making moves because he was in that government sponsored afterschool program... Needless to say hes a fool, the time he spent "studying abroad" and "working" here would have been much better served getting his BA. He could have gotten his BA and a contract by now.. anyways he is a true 병신. I also agree Korea is not a place that needs much volunteering. |
