I can't believe you like Portland. It's a pathetic little city that you can walk across in two hours. The bars suck. You get two choices, Yuppie or gross. I've been there a half dozen times and each time I keep thinking only a place like this could make me miss Seattle. As for urban planning they seem to have missed the South Side which is basically a huge collection of strip malls from the 60's and strip bars. What's that place, the Acropolis (?) that has the $3 steaks? Nothing like a steak with all the trim er trimmings. It's hard to believe the damn place has their own NBA team. And all the damn one-way streets. Arghh, god forbid you miss your turn, you're screwed. Combine that with the world's slowest metro rail service.
Plus, it's the only city I've been to that had more grungy little Goth kids begging for change on corners than Seattle. Get a job! Oh, that huge nose piercing and the black lipstick with the Alice Cooper eye shadow and your crummy attitude might be an impediment so no I guess you'll just have to take to bothering other people on the streets for cigs.
Portland sucks and 2,000,000 people in other parts of Oregon agree with me.
I will agree with your assessment that Oregon is white. Holy bejeezus, once you're out of Portland, the rest of the State looks like an Osmond family reunion.
I like that Dungeness Crab though. Best damn tasting crustacean ever.

Just got this email from the Embassy notification people, whoever they are about voting.

Quote:
------------------------------------------------------------
Voting Information
------------------------------------------------------------

We'd like to remind all adult U.S. citizens to submit their Federal
Post
Card Applications (FPCAs) to their local election offices in the United
States early. Citizens voting under the Uniformed and Overseas
Citizens
Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) are eligible to participate in all
elections
for Federal offices. Many are also eligible to vote in state and local
elections.

The 2004-2005 Voting Assistance Guide is available on-line at
http://www.fvap.gov. The Guide contains state-by-state procedures for
UOCAVA citizens to register and/or request an absentee ballot using the
Federal Post Card Application. FPCAs are also available at the
American
Citizens Services Section of the U.S. Embassy and Consulates.

While the process can vary because each state sets its own rules on
residency and registration, the basic steps are:

-- You complete and mail a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). Get
the
form at the Embassy or download it from www.fvap.gov and mail it to
your
state;

-- A Local Election Official in your state of residence approves your
request to register/vote, or asks you for more information;

-- Once approved, a Local Election Official in your state of
residence
mails you an absentee ballot;

--You complete the ballot, notarize it free at the Embassy if needed,
and
mail it back to your state of residence.

------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, at least I don't panhandle like 200,000 other people in Portland. Hey, maybe that's a career option for you.

Here's a question:

I have a California license, which I got because my Massachusetts one was set to expire this year. I lived in California only for 6 weeks though at my friend's house.

The last place I held a residence was Washignton DC. So, who should I contact for an absentee ballot? CA or DC?

Can you "prove" residence in DC? In which state will your vote not be nullified by the electoral college?

I can't imagine how anyone can work up such vitriol for a city! And such a bland, innocuous city at that!

Methinks you have some other unresolved issues. You seem to have a lot of inchoate anger splashing around! Get your heart broken by one of those little goth girls?

How would I go about proving residence anyways? Like I said, I have a CA license, but didn't really establish a residence there. My dad lives in Georgia now. Any suggestions?

Just to vote in California, I think all it would take is fill out a 'voters registration' card with a California address - preferably the same on as your Drivers License.

If you want to later take classes at a California university and pay in-state tuition rates, most likely you'd need to establish a seemingly permanent address and a bank account. Having some prior phone bill or electric bills will help as well. Occassionally its possible to have to show prior income tax returns paid into the State of California.

Legal people,

How are absentee ballots factored into the Electoral College? I'm not a resident of my state anymore, so where do those votes come in to play?

They are counted in the state in which you last resided. You are not required to be a current resident there nor vote in local elections.
