So my apartment is in the Eemundong area of dongdaemun-gu here in Seoul. I will be moving there Sunday.

Anyone know what the area is like?

It's not worth moving to unless you have a good job. I do, so it's worth it.

Costco isn't far, but with the exchange rate these days, Costco has raised their prices significantly. There's a very small E-Mart that's opened up recently, which is good. Cheongnyangni market is a great place for fruit and vegetables because everything is fresh and super cheap. I highly recommend Cheongnyangni market.

Groceries aside, what can I say? There are a few good, but not great restaurants. The area is ugly and dirty, but you could say that about a lot of neighborhoods in any country that's so recently developed. There are lots of pretty girls because of the universities in the area.

Do you have any specific questions?

I live basically down the street from Hoegi station. Is the area decent? As in, some shops and PC bang and say, a pizza place or two.

I don't plan on staying there to have fun or anything, just wondering how it is to live, say-- need some quick cheap pizza or quick run to get food, some access to a PC bang if my damn internet isnt set up. Some restaurants are nice.

But it sounds like Costco is close and the market sounds nice. E-mart is great, no lotte mart around? I hate going far for groceries.

How would you rate the area around Hoegi station? Same?

Sorry, I know it's a weird question. Confused

Homeplus is the only game in town, as far as I'm concerned. It's generally cheaper than the other mega stores, and I hate Emart with a passion. I don't know why, but for some reason, the braniacs behind Emart decided to make a store like Homeplus, make things harder to find, narrow the isles so that you're constantly bumping into people, use an abrasive color scheme, and only supply shopping carts for 500 won instead of free baskets.

If Dante had lived in modern Korea, I'm pretty sure that Emart would be one of the circles of his inferno.

Emart aside, Dongdaemun is a happening Gu. It's close to all of the Seoul action, and the subway network is great in that area. It used to be better for shopping, but the stadiums have been taken down and replaced by parks, but there is still a literal undergound shopping area that's pretty cool.

Sounds good. Are a lot of these areas accessible by foot? Or are we talking about taxis and subway hopping and walking?

For me, anything 30 min by foot is not too bad for general shopping, groceries would have to be taxied back though. So what kind of access is there to these places? Is foot out of question? The gu seems pretty big~

My point of origin I guess is hoegi station, so thinking 30 min by foot from there? I just hope I dont have to subway to even get to a basic mart with a little bit of everything in it.

Seoul is such a big city, you will want to visit other places. I didn't find it mattered which tangent point you lived at around the circle, but I prefer living in the southwestern part because transportation is more convenient.

I spend quite a bit of time there.
Basically its a University neighbourhood - lots of bars, hofs, norae/dvd bangs, cheap restaraunts etc. As I'm sure you know, Hoegi stn is smack bang between Hufs and Kyunghee Uni, so there's a very young crowd there.

I live in Dongdaemun gu. I live 2 mins from Hoegi station...so do hundreds of foreigners. There are plenty of facilities...restaurants, pc rooms, taxis, etc....It's Seoul...so no worries there.

There's a homeplus at Jegi dong and Jeonnong dong. On the main road near hoegi station, there's a large main grocery store where everyone shops at.
