I have a 2 hour class one day and then another one hour class later in the week at the college I work at. I've been using a book for the 2 hours and handouts for the 1 hour class. I'm finding the students just want to finish the handouts as quickly as possible and are getting no value from the class. Any suggestions instead of the handouts?

Maybe you could ask the students to create their own handouts / review sheets during the one hour class, based on the language points the class covered in the two hour book class. Set it as a group work task and compare each group's handouts with the one you have made (but not distributed).

During my TESOL course I found some ideas appealing:

Get a map of a large city, say LA and put tourist attractions on them and do things in some groups with conversations about where to go, what to see...conversations in English.

When I taught in Russia at MGU I brought in newspapers and magazines and we discussed articles and they read in English and we had debates.

these kids have done so many handouts and worksheets and book work that they can zip through it. Remember, even if their speaking ability is low, their reading comp. is probably pretty high.

Most of the handouts I give my kids are unworkable without the directions, or additional info that is revealed, in stages, during the class.

For example, dont give them a handout where they match words to definitions. Just give them the defs. and use a PP or poster to give them a word bank.

The next entry on their handout could be 'write which word is gramatically incorrect and change it', but they cant start it until you show them (or read them) the sentences.

As far as time management goes just follow this rule: overplan everything. Every class you should have at least 1 more activity planned than you will have time for. Running out of time isnt a problem, but suddenly being stuck with 15 minutes on the clock and nothing to do is tragic. At the start of every class I write our day's schedule on the board 1-6. We rarely get to the 6th activity (which is a free writing reflection in their English Notebooks), but it's always there in case the class blows through the other activities.
