I'm working at a hagwon and my director has me doing private lessons with his 13-year-old son. I wouldn't mind except his son has a piss-poor attitude and I feel like I'm wasting my time.

So my questions are: is it normal for hagwon directors do make their foreign teachers do private lessons for their kids? Is it ok or should I be worried?

Are you being paid? If so Im 99.9% sure its illegal. Was it in the contract? (Even if it was its still illegal) Dont do anything you dont want to do.

But from what I hear, its a common thing.

If you are on an E2 visa and you are teaching a lesson for 1 or more students inside the school that sponsored your visa at the address of your sponsor then your classes are perfectly legal.

You can call them "private" or whatever, they may be for 1 student or more, it can be regular students, free students or relatives of a teacher, manager or the owner, but as long as you are getting paid according to the contract and you are working at and for your E2 visa sponsor, then the classes are legal.

It is also quite common to teach relatives, other teachers, principals, etc. in schools in Korea.

It is also quite common for these special students to be quite annoying, unfortunately.
