Howdy folks. If you marry a Korean gal to gain citizenship, do you retain it if you get divorced? |

I hear you need an F5 Visa. It requires some assets (Cash in bank, apt, etc) and minimum of $50,000 invested in the country. This gives you security to stay in the event of divorce. Otherwise, it could be back to E2 for you. |

The min requirement in terms of how much money you have to have in the bank is 30 million won for an F-5 visa (there are many other requirements, but since you asked specifically about that one I won't touch on the rest of them). You can not marry a Korean to gain citizenship, you gain long term residency. Doing so just for that reason is a very bad idea and could technically get you in a load of trouble. |

This is probably the first time I've heard of a possible Westerner wanting to marry for KOREAN citizenship. Not the other way round. |

You can get an F2 visa... but not citizenship.
Before you go marrying someone for citizenship... be aware that it's REALLY hard to get a divorce in Korea. Even with both parties mutually agreeing to the divorce, it's time consuming.
If she/he won't give you an agreement divorce... you're looking at a 1 or 2 year fight, where you have to PROVE that they have had some massive breach of marital ethics (adultary, refusing sex, physical abuse) to be granted a divorce. If you "lose", you can be denied a divorce, and/or forced to pay massive financial penalties. You could be looking at 50-150,000w in "I'm sorry I messed up your life" fees, particularly if you're male.
Divorce isn't socially acceptable... so it's likely she'll be under a lot of pressure from family to deny the divorce, and just be seperated. |

Korea has the THIRD highest divorce rate in the world.
That doesn't sound to me like it's particularly hard to get one nor socially unacceptable. |

1. I counted 16 sites, and some of those were duplicates of an already cited site and almost all of them were based on the same flaw piece of info.
2. It seems the Korean government put out the wrong comparison. Each site that claimed that Korea had the third highest was based on a 2.8 divorces per 1000 stat the Korean government put out. They claimed that this made Korea the third in the world. However, Wiki puts Korean divorces even higher at 2.9 per 1000, and yet Korea is 17th because it includes a lot more countries instead of just large Western countries (which is fair if you are going to say "in the world").
3. Korea's divorce rate is pretty high and very similar to the divorce rate in most of the countries ESL teachers come from. Australia is 2.67, Canada is 2.24, UK is 2.8, and the U.S. is 3.6. So I agree, it seems that divorce in Korea is fairly common and is about the same as most of our home countries. |

Korea: Divorce rate ranks 3rd in the world
According to Korean government statistics, the divorce rate in Korea is growing at an average rate of 0.5% per year. In the past ten years, the total number of divorces has increased by nearly three times. That is to say, out of every 1,000 couples, 2.8 of them will divorce, making Korea's divorce rate the third highest in the world after America and the UK.
