A friend of mine is talking to a kindy hagwon about possibly working a year.
They're telling him something about kindy hagwon not being allowed to hire English teachers, thus not allowing him to get a visa.
Is there any truth to this?
Help is appreciated.

Regular Korean kindies are supposedly unable to hire foreigners. (Which is a pity as that was my job at one point in Japan, it rocks!).

Any hogwon, regardless of student age group can hire, presuming they meet the rules re student numbers etc.

Sounds odd that they are saying this during hiring!

It would depend on their registration.

If they are registered as an English hagwon then they can. As a regular kindergarten, probably not.

B.S.

I worked for a kindi hakwon. Well... preschool / kindy

It was a chain. There were 9 foreign teachers at my place, and another 30 at other schooles.

That's B.S.

I once worked at an afternoon 학원 in which the director sent me out to kindergartens in the area.
I included contact information from those kindergartens on my resume.
The immigration office told me that I should erase that information or I could get in trouble.

You can only work legally at the address on your ARC.

You were working illegally. Immigration could have busted, fined and deported you based on your own confession in your resume.

You were lucky.

Other teachers have been busted based on their own resumes.

What in God's name (Happy Easter) is the point of writing "hagwon" in hangul?

I don't like it in 로마자.
It looks too much like "hog."
Why? What's wrong with writing it in 한글?

No need to apologize, sir. Just seemed a tad pretentious, as many of the viewers here may not read hangul. And since the primary goal (i hope) of this forum is to help ease NewB's transition, embedding the answers they might seek in Korean might not exactly be helpful. If you don't like "hogwan" just write it "hagwan," it doesn't really make any difference.

again, not looking to start a fray, just don't want the very valuable information to be lost.

Have to agree writing random words in korean does sound a bit pretentious. Were all mostly westerners who speak english here soo theres no point to include it unless needed to explain something about korea or someone is asking for it. BUt thats just my 2 cents.

I still dont get why people call it HOG won though... to me when koreans speak it doesnt sound anything like that at all. Seems like how westerners seem to be pronouncing it.. sounds alot more like HA GWON to me....

We had a teacher who came in person to the school where I work looking for a job. He had been refused a visa previously by Immi for teaching illegally just based on his resume. We wanted to hire him but Immigration would not issue him a visa and they could tell from his resume that he had been teaching at other jobs illegally, without an E2 visa and just on a tourist visa. He had to leave for Taiwan in a hurry and just barely avoided being arrested. The school where he had been teaching was closed down shortly thereafter.

Hint to teachers:

Don't put illegal activities on your resume.
