I would recommend Battle of Alberta...Sad to say but Ontario just doesn't cut it this year.
I'll be out of the country and may not have time to check so I'll make my picks now.
Flames, Flyers, Canucks, Ducks, Leafs |

I'll second the Battle of Alberta so that's 2 in favor. If there aren't any different suggestions in by Tuesday night, this will be GotW.
Also, if you guys are interested in doing a playoff pool--> say so. Who's in? Who's out? Format? |

Ottawa Toronto would be more competitive as there is one point difference between them. What's the point difference between Oil and Flamers?
The same format for the playoff pool would be great. |

Good point Ying. Other factors also help flesh this out as well.
Sometimes closeness in points doesn't tell the whole story (vis a vis competitiveness). For instance, last week Anaheim (88pts) beat San Jose (115 pts) 5-2 in San Jose (even with their stellar home record). Anaheim is on a bit of a tear and fighting to keep a playoff spot which probably helped no doubt (but the last 10 games were similar--8-2-0 vs SJ 7-2-1).
However, having looked into it now, Ottawa and Toronto played 5 games and all games were a one point difference with one ending in OT and another in a SO (one game was 3-1---empty net goal?). The tally is Tor 3 and Ott 2 of the 5 games.
By comparison, Calg and Edm have played 3 games. Edm won the first 4-3 in Calg; lost the second 4-6 in Calg and lost the most recent game 2/21 3-2 in a shootout. Edm is 3 points out of the playoff picture with 4 games to go this week. They're tied with Minn at 83, while St. L and Nash are tied at 86 for 9th and 8th respectively. So, the playoff spot is one aspect not in the Ontario Battle. (Calg has of course clinched a playoff spot.)
Point being, both are going to be relatively competitive and I wouldn't bet on either myself (if not GotW). But I agree that the Battle of Ontario should be given consideration and not dismissed out of hand.
I'll retract my earlier comment and hold my opinion in abeyance and let the others settle it. 1 vote for Alberta and 1 vote for Ontario. I'll post the GotW on Wednesday night. Until then, whichever game acquires the most support will be GotW. This could come down to one iddly piddly vote either way...lol
The same format for the playoff pool would be great
Which is what? (see previous page, my post at the bottom).. |

Re: the playoff pool...whatever worked last year was cool enough, as i recall. Can't remember much about it.
Here's a link to a good online free playoff pool the good people at sportsnet are doing.
I think you need a canadian address to collect a prize, but it's fun anyway.
http://fantasy.sportsnet.ca/sportsnet/hkplayoff09
And my cool burn, this final week, will come with these picks:
Toronto, Carolina, Philly, Van, and San Jose. |
