In leaner times, thong sales soar

In these economic hard times, consumers are tightening their belts - and their underwear.

Sales of lingerie and thongs rose in the first quarter by 9.3 percent from the same period last year at all branches of Lotte Department Store, it said yesterday. In the first nine days of this month, sales shot up 12 percent on-year.

Total underwear sales at the department stores headquarters in downtown Seoul were up just 1 or 2 percent in the first quarter. But sales of sexier underwear at the main store were 13 percent higher. As of Thursday lingerie sales were up 19 percent this month.

The most popular underwear among young women is small thongs, said Lee Hyang-nam, Lotte Department Stores women casual merchandiser.

Hyundai Department Store is also enjoying a similar surge in lingerie sales. In January, lingerie sales were up 6 percent from last year, with growth of 7.5 percent in February and 9 percent in March.

The store said thong sales surged more than 50 percent on-year.

Lingerie is flamboyant but compared to other fashion wear, its cheaper, said Yum Ji-hoon, in charge of lingerie at Hyundai. It seems that lingerie satisfies the desire to be fashionable in economic hard times.

Lingerie sales at Shinsegae Department Store in the first nine days of this month were up 15 percent from last year. The retailer said particularly slim or casual lingerie were popular among consumers, as people spend more time at home in this economy.

Very Happy

Nice.

It hurts when you get a fine young thing alone, only to discover she's sporting a set of briefs that belong on a a nursing home patient.

I got a shock this weekend at Emart with my family. A gaggle of leggy (maybe as old as) 15 year old girls was in front of us on the escalator. One knelt to tie her shoe. She was sporting a high riding blue thong. My son noticed. "Pappa, why is her mmf..mff...mmffff (my hand over his mouth)

The good news: young Korean women are wearing thongs more often.

The bad news: young Korean men are wearing thongs more often.

Well, they do come in a couple set.
