I'm currently rewriting my resume before I start applying. I graduated in 2006 and have worked in finance/accounting jobs since so my resume is focused on those areas. My question is whether or not I should just remove these jobs unless I can tailor them to show applicable teaching skills. I did work as a swim coach and taught swim lessons during college so I want to for sure put that on my new resume.
I'm going to be most likely applying through recruiters. What do recruiters typically look for in a resume? Do I just list the jobs I've done since college and keep the focus on those teaching swimming jobs or do I leave a big blank for my post college career? |

Don't sweat it too much. You have a pulse and a degree. You are in.
In fact, you could fabricate an entire resume. Doesn't matter. Nobody's gonna check. |

I was in a similar boat.
I graduated in 2006 and had been using a resume made to highlight all the chemistry related stuff I did in college and my jobs in the field.
I rewrote my resume because I felt like otherwise it would look like I'm trying to get a science job with all the technical BS i put in there to make it look good.
I also took out all of the crap jobs (manual labor and food service) because none of them were relevant and I summarized my "professional" career jobs in in a couple of sentences each with bullet points and added something like "This position required excellent communication and organizational skills" so it appears to be somewhat relevant to teaching.
They certainly don't care if you waited tables.
They certainly don't care about what you did with your degree, but it makes you look like a better human being if you graduated school and worked in a professional environment rather than living in your parents' basement.
My recruiter hasn't said anything about it to me, though. Perhaps it's enough that you are able to make one.
I also downloaded some word templates so it looks pretty snazzy. |
