Things have finally stabilized here at work (they sold the school to another person), and the new owner realized she needed to give me a vacation, so she and the old boss decided that it would start next week (it's a lull in the period for students because of testing). This isn't a complaint about having to take an immediate vacation; I'm find with that.

I'm just trying to figure out where to take a vacation. I originally wanted to go to Bangkok, but it's too iffy for me there right now with potential violence. Also, I don't have a lot of money to spend, but I have enough to do a little bit. I could do the Korea thing, but I'm really tired of veteran memorials and temples.

Any advice?

Why not go to Jeju.
Good packages out there, and if you can drive get a hire car (if you have Korean lisence) but otherwse try to get around a few attractions.

Nice circus there, submarines, hot air balloons, Halla mountain, or just chill at a pension/hotel etc.
Warmer than mainland Korea and semi-tropical.

go to phuket in Thailand, even during the riots in december last year, it remained much mroe peaceful than bangkok

Philippines. Besides, the peso is weaker than the baht. Food's not as good as in Thailand, but the beaches do just fine.

I think Seo-gu has a relaxing atmosphere. A nice, quiet evening at McDonalds followed by a romantic stroll past the love motels while avoiding the vomit could easily build memories for the future. Wink

I second the Philippines. One of the less well-traveled, cheaper northern islands. Laze in the sun, do some snorkeling or scuba diving, drink dirt cheap, good beer.

Hong Kong is a definite must see while in this neck of the woods, and you can find reasonable accomodations without doing the backpacker special. The city is a lot of fun, but you can get in a great experience in under 4 days if you have to.

Tokyo? Seoul on steroids. Take a day or two there and then get your arse on a bullet train to Osaka or destinations elsewhere.

Guam? Not unless you have an in on some remarkable dollar exchange rates that the rest of the world has missed out on, or a dollar account you're just itching to peel through. Not cheap, although doable, and on a dollar-based economy, there are more interesting places to dump coin.

Just my 2 cents. But again, check out some of the places in the Philippines if you require easy access and beach. Vietnam? Why not?

H.K. does not have many cheap places to stay. Phillipines is quite expensive for airfare and getting in an out of Manilla. Not sure why people say the Philipines is cheap as a decent hotel there costs about 80-120000 W. Thailand is cheap and places like Phuket and Koh Phagnon would be safe.

China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Loas would be good for a cheap and fun vacations

Vancouver. If you're willing to spend 5-7hrs going to Bangkok, why not do a couple hrs more and go to BC. Thai prices are inflated to Hell anyway and there is a civil war about to errupt.
