Pixies should be somewhere on that kind of list. As should Pavement. And maybe Dinosaur Jr.

Lists of that nature generally have a high capacity for suckage, however.

Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" deserves a spot somewhere on the list.

True, alternative is a pretty meaningless term. Well, sure, everything is alternative, a choice of one thing over another. Too many genres out there really, in music, film, literature, whatever. But there will be more and the confusion will roll on.

Had an alternative breakfast this morning, man it was good.

I'd say the exact opposite; there are not enough genres. "Alternative" is one big monolithic sound of totally whitebread rock bands from the past 20/25 years, and most people who listen mainly to it are unaware of the rich musical history this planet actually has.

I love how music threads turn into great big ego trips and pissing contests.

My definition of a top ten would consist mostly of albums I may not listen to that much (if ever), but are clearly immensely influential.

In no particular order:

1) The Velvet Underground And Nico
2) Sex Pistols--Never Mind The Bollocks
3) The Jesus And Mary Chain--Psychocandy
4) MC5--Kick Out The Jams
5) X--Los Angeles
6) Bad Brains--Bad Brains
7) The New York Dolls--The New York Dolls
Cool The Stooges--Fun House
9) Black Sabbath--Black Sabbath
10) Eddy Cochran--Eddy Cochran

I'd even put KISS--Alive! Or Led Zeppelin--IV but neither would be considered 'alt-rock'.

Eddy Cochran isn't, but his early punky attitude in the annals of rock'n'roll were very much in contrast to the Everly Brothers or even Buddy Holly, both of whom were equally great.

If we're talking alt-rock, here's 3 of the top of my head:

Doolittle - The Pixies
Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins
In Utero - Nirvana
