I just came back from Thailand, where I bought a lot of great movies on DVD .... they work fine on my laptop, but won't work on my home DVD player. So ..... I just bought a region free player from this company:

http://www.zonefreedvd.com

After giving them a call, they suggested the Duracom DVD715CF for US $249:

http://www.zonefreedvd.com/codefreedvd/duracom-dvd.html

I'll test it out as soon as it arrives! Razz

All the best,

Dave

If you happen to be in North America, go to your local Wal-Mart. The cheapest DVD players there tend to be 3rd-rate brands - they're actually the ones you want. Most of those models have codes/cracks that you input through their remotes that make them region-free. You get these hack instructions on websites throughout the net. Do a Google search for DVD Region Hacks or something like that and you should come up with useful sites.

I bought one from a Wal-Mart in Canada last summer for about $120cdn that works great with Korean DVDs after entering the code. It also runs on 100-240v power, so it doesn't need a converter to use here in Korea.

Note that many/most "real" brands (Sony, Panasonic) don't have this "feature". In this case it pays to buy cheap.

I'm sure Yuko will console you.

I always try to look on the back of the package and see what the coding is first. I find that most Japanese and Hong Kong DVDs are coded "All"

Well, it was the one I wanted because it could play dvds from all zones, work on both NTSC and PAL televisions, had dual 110-220 voltage, and was completely automatic in selecting between the zones and NTSC/PAL. And the reviews were excellent.

God, even I have a life away from Dave's ESL Cafe! Cool

Speaking of my life, time to go and pick up my kids from school!

While looking for a new t-shirt, I found 2 region-free DVD players at http://www.jlist.com/cgi-bin/shop.cgi?ss=player+unit&function=search&rating=R.

one is $100 USD, the other is $150. Features are listed, They are located in San Diego, and shipping is no problem.

I would like to purchase a 'Boot DVD' to make my school's player accept my U.S. DVDs. Captain Obvious 2.0, you said that you had seen them at Yonsan for about 30,000 won. Forgive me for my naive question, but does that mean I have to enter a U.S. military base to purchase these or does it mean that they sell them in an area outside of or around Yongsan?

I live far from Seoul, but would be willing to make a trip to get something as valuable for my classroom as this.

mokpochica,

Is it a DVD player or computer? I don't recall if you mentioned and I'm too lazy to check.

If it's a player, do a search on the net for the make and model for making it region free. About two years ago I bought an LG DVD player and the salesperson made it region free on the spot by simply entering a code using the remote control.

Now, all I have to do is put a DVD in and push play!

I found these sites below using google:

http://www.dvdcodes.co.uk/codes/
they want money but not much.

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdhacks.php
no fee involved.

Good luck

I've got some questions. I'm in Osaka and I ran across a DVD shop with region-free DVDs, normal DVDs, and even some region-free DVD players. The one available is a Pioneer for 39900 yen(approximately $330 US), but it assumably has a Japanese power adaptor, and only does NTSC.

First...are Korean DVDs a different region from Japanese DVDs? Edit: Nevermind...I looked that one up already.

Second...can DVD players handle being plugged in to an adaptor power convertor?

Third...does that sound fair for a DVD player? My friend here says that Pioneer is top-of-the-line, and it does look nice, but I don't know an awful lot about DVD players. I basically want to be able to play DVDs from America and Asia, for the moment.

My school's DVD player is just a DVD machine, not a computer. I thought my computer had a player, but turns out it's just a CD-ROM.

I'll check out those sites and try to get those codes. Thanks!

I bought a region-free player from www.mp3playerstore.com. Nice, tiny, and portable also.

My school's DVD player is a NEXPhil player brand. Hmmmm. I've never heard of that before. Maybe it's a branch of Phillips? Still looking for the codes...

http://www.nexphil.com/eng/main.htm

I think it's just some small Korean company or something.

Hey all. I was going to pick up some UK DVDs (I have a region-free player that can handle NTSC and PAL) and I was wondering if I can pick up a PAL -> NTSC converter anywhere to watch them on Korean TVs?

There was a post on here a month ago about how to make your LG DVD player region free. A lot of people dismissed it, but we have an LG DVD player and punched in the code and TA DA now our Korean LG DVD player is region free. Its not illegal in Korea.
If you have a Korean DVD player, go to their website or call the company. Chances are they will give you a code to make the DVD player region free.
Easier than a chip thats for sure.

I read the message, punched in the code and that was it, easy as Pie!!

I still owe that poster a HUGE hug Very Happy
