But where do those infected patients come from?
In this case, they are from MEXICO or the other 7 countries ( where swine flu infection has been confirmed), just remind you, 40 were in the states.
If the US government didnt do anything to quarantine the 40 cases, what do you think the situiation would be? The situation would be, more people get infected due to the normal human contact, not because they spit everywhere or sneeze without covering their mouth, the governemet function is here when it comes to infectious disease: controlling the spreading sources.
Interesting, Can you actually imagine a country under good government regulation with its people living like rats and pigs? |

| The Gov't can only do so much to contain the disease. They can try to keep the source out of the country, but guess what, pathogens probably don't give a shit what the govn't says, they don't respect borders. The moment swine flu enters korea, all the gov't regulations mean pretty much nothing when everybody is spitting and coughing and sneezing openly. |

Wow, you are not only an English teacher but a public health expert and pathologist as well! People in Korea spit everywhere. People in China spit even more. In China I have seen people spit on the floor in trains. Most bathrooms in Korea have no soap and if they do it's a communal bar of soap and usually a shared towel.
Dr. Panda.........what happens if you go take a dump and don't wash your hands? Well, even just a little poo on your hand contains all kinds of pathogens. What happens if you never wash your hands, touch a doorknob, then touch your eyes or mouth afterward? How about being packed in a subway with hundreds of other people? |

How do Mexcio and Hongkong react to Swine Flu
Mexcio:
Due to limited human and material resources, Mexico government cant offer medicines to relatives of those who died of Swine Flu, despite their requirement. (Dont people care about their individual hygiene?) Hospitals refused to administer suspected cases.
Mexico government's excuse for their delayed response is: Mexico is the first country in the world to combat a situiation which has never happened before.
Hongkong:
Considering the lesson Hongkong people got 6 years ago from SARS (which 300 died), Hongkong government has taken every precaution in case swine flu break out.
6 hospitals in Hongkong are capable for testing.
1400 beds in 15 hospitals for emergency.
20 millions of anti-flu medicine: Tamrflu
Close surveillance in airport and harbour.

My common sense is based on scientific principle. If people are spitting everywhere, coughing everywhere and not washing their hands, germs will spread. doesn't matter what the central governing body does or doesn't do.
The ROK can try to do as much as they can to keep swine flu out, but if it slips through, then it's up to the people. |

Your sarcasm doesnt work on me, travelingsmart, I have a MD degree and I am going to get my PhD soon, so thanks for calling me Dr.Panda, and, not being too humble, I am a health expert.
We all know that, even in a cleaner country (as you and others labelled), generally good indivudial hygiene doesnt prevent influenza from spreading, only a matter of degree, this is how virus survive on this planet for hundreds of millions of years, however a common cold rarely kills people, so that governments dont really give a shit.
Now, please just replace the common influenza with swine influenza in the same countries. And lets see what will happen, oh yeah, swine influenza spreads in clean countries as well (surprised?)...
But since this pathogen is so fatal, no goverment can sit back...under this situation, its more of a battle between virus and goverment regulation~!
Good public hygiene concept is necessary, but in combatting a fatal disease, a goverment plays way more importnat role....is my point. |

Mexico has socialized medicine and look how it has killed nearly 150 people. America, at least for now, does not and has only a few reported cases to date. |

Ah, you are correct. I just read that. One of the extreme oddities of this disease is that it seems to kill people with stronger immune systems more easily. The overcompensation by their immune system actually helps bring about death. |
