If you collect news articles under the heading "uh-huh, and you still say WE'RE the ones ethically unqualified to teach?!?" here's another one. The Gwangju Ilbo reports that an English teacher at a girls' high school in Gwangju punished around 10 students for their low test scores by removing their skirts and making them kneel in front of the teachers' desk.

시 교육청은 28일 �해당 학교 교사와 학생들을 대상으로 조사를 벌인 결과, 이 학교 영어교사가 수업도중 일부 여학생에게 치마를 벗게 하는 체벌을 준 것으로 드러났다�고 밝혔다.
이날 시 교육청이 조사한 결과에 따르면 이 학교 1학년 영어 담당 여교사는 수업시간에 본 쪽지시험에서 성적이 나쁜 학생에게 교복 치마를 벗은 채 무릎을 꿇도록 하고, 교탁 주변을 돌게하는 벌칙을 줬다.
이 같은 벌칙은 신학기인 지난달 쪽지시험에서 �0점�을 맞은 학생들을 중심으로 10여명이 받았다.
이들 중 일부는 치마를 벗고 교탁 뒤에서 2∼3분간 무릎을 꿇다가 제자리로 되돌아갔고, 일부는 치마를 벗은 채 교탁 주변을 왔다갔다하는 벌을 받았다고 시 교육청은 설명했다.
문제의 여교사는 진상조사에서 �성적이 너무 나쁜 아이에 대한 벌칙의 하나로 학생들이 제안한 �이마 매 맞기�와 �치마 벗기� 중 하나를 정했다�고 해명했다.
하지만 일부 학생들은 �학생들이 이 같은 벌칙을 제안했다는 주장은 사실이 아니며, 치마를 벗고 교실을 돌게 하는 벌칙까지 줬다�고 반박했다.
시 교육청 관계자는 �학생들과 논의해 정했다 하더라도 체벌방식이 적절치 않으므로 정확한 진상조사를 거쳐 징계 등의 조치를 취하겠다�고 밝혔다. 한편 시 교육청은 이 같은 체벌이 재발하지 않도록 광주지역 교사들을 대상으로 체벌 방지 교육 등을 강화해 나가기로 했다. |

wow. OK, hit them, but make them get naked? weird.
They had to get naked and get on their knees with their arms in the air in front of the class too. tsk tsk tsk.
Some Korean teacher has a fetish-e. No one in their right mind would ever subject their students to such a punishment.

It didn't say she made them get naked. I'm assuming they had underwear on, but, still, there were probably boys present, and this is a form of abuse. What she did to those students was horrible. Usually, Koreans turn the other way if you hit a student on the hand with a stick, but this is not a typical punishment, because it sort of violates the honor of the kids, and, thus, the parents. That teacher is going to get it. |

| At first I thought this was a foreign English teacher. THANK GOD it's a Korean teacher. Oh, and a Korean teacher with a spanking fetish? Noooooo, say it isn't so. |

making children disrobe, even in front of the same sex, does more than violate honor....it's criminal.
Making children get naked (underwear naked) is criminal.
nothing will come of it though. just blood money. |

I thought it must have been a girl's school. What the teacher did reminds me of fraternity type hazing. Anyway, the OP misspelled the word stripped unless the teacher painted a stripe on them, too. |

It's a Korean teacher, not a foreign teacher. The OP should have put the word Korean in front of English teacher and also spelled stripped correctly, and the teacher is probably female. It's like a female adult (teacher) hazing students because her ego was offended. Korea can't expel a Korean. Maybe, they will fire her, but I doubt it. Or, she may be suspended for some time. How do they do things in Korea when it comes to such things. Do they get more than fined? I am glad it wasn't a foreigner, because that's what I have thought when I read the title, though I thought it would be unlikely. Still, I am sad that the girls went through this. |

I made that change, though it should have been obvious it was a Korean teacher. Likewise, as I said in the OP it was at a girls' high school.
The students, apparently, had the choice between this and getting hit, so they chose this. I'm sure we had similar punishments in gym class when I was in high school. Just worth bringing up since it is repeated time and time again that we're dangerous and that we're ethically unqualified to teach children, but time and time again we read about Korean teachers behaving badly. |

HER, not he. The teacher is female. And she is a native Korean...can't expel her from the country. |

So does mine - partly because female teachers with families can't stand the hours. They much prefer to teach at our adjacent middle school.
Even if this was a female teacher, there's a chance that a male teacher could walk by at any time. While they may well go to the jimjilbang every week and be perfectly comfortable with same-sex nudity, to make them disrobe at school in such a fashion would be extremely insulting and degrading.
So basically she made them kneel in their underwear in front of the class? I've seen a Korean movie where a male teacher made boys at a boys high school drop their trousers and stand in a row in their underwear. Perhaps that's where she got the idea. One of the young female teachers at my school has got a little creepy lately with her touching of students. Maybe she'll read this and wise up. |

| Totally demoted them down to the lowest level for low test scores. I can't say I agree with that on a high school level, but military does things like this such as in basic training to young recruits. Day 1, they make us strip to nothing and throw metal corrugated trash cans at us calling us homos, wimps, and all kinds of other names and then dump our bags and make those hiding porn to kneel down and well I don't want elaborate any further the dirty tricks drill sergeants do to break you down. Things got better in the end. |
