I'm wondering what the worst intersection in Seoul is as far as traffic goes? My vote goes to Gangnam subway station.

I can think of stretches of road that are more horrible due to many intersections with lights that don't time well with one another.

All around Cheonggyechon in the Dongdaemun area comes to mind.

As does the strip going from Apkujeong station up past Galleria during rush times.

Also not thrilled when I have to travel North/South towards Dongguk around the Tway-ghey-rho area during rush. There is a side 1/2 lane that taxis jam themselves into just so they can get ahead of everyone. Wish they'd close that off.

I have been driving in Seoul for 4 years now and this one gets my vote. I hate that intersection, there is always a traffic jam.

Yep... that'd be #1. I forgot about it because I NEVER allow myself to drive there.

This is not limited to Seoul. My drive to work on Thursdays and Fridays takes 20 minutes going there and 40 minutes coming back. You inevitably hit at least one red, then can watch every successive light turn red just before you get there.

The taxis and local buses have solved this problem by running reds and doing 30 to 40 over the limit on a twisty, 80kph, tractor laden "highway". For some unfathomable reason they recently removed every speed camera on the stretch.

The Hyehwa rotary does not take a long time to get through, the be planning of the rotary gets my vote for poorest plan. It can be very dangerous, especially on a motorcycle, to turn left at the rotary due to cars entering the rotary at the wrong times and crossing up to 3 curved lanes to get to the other side. Traveling southwest from Hansung University station to the rotary and then turning left onto Daehangno is horrible. Cars in the far left lane should not enter Daehangno, but everyone does, so you have 3 lanes of traffic entering 2 lanes while in a curved lane that started out curving left, but then you have to curve right to get onto Daehangno.

The worst part is that last year, the city took out the bridge and increased the number of cars in the rotary. They redid the street, grass and rotary instead of making a regular intersection.

All the while, the Hyehwa cops at the cop shop at the rotary do nothing to enforce lines and stopping at lights at the intersection.

There're lots of awful intersections in Seoul. It would have been so much better to drive here in the 80s than now. Of course if you were driving in the 80s it meant your job was 'driver'. If you were wealthy enough to have a car you were wealthy enough to have a driver..

One area that annoys me a lot is the Sinchon intersection if you come from Sogang direction towards Yonsei. It's two lanes wide but someone is always stopped in the right hand lane with their hazards on making a delivery or something. It can take 20 minutes to go 250m on a rainy day.

Actually the whole area around Yonsei is a awful around rush hour. I wish I had a Matiz so I could pick it up and carry it around that mess when driving in the area.

A funny intersection is the Haebangchon 5-way intersection. You don't usually have to wait too long there, so it isn't too big of an inconvenience, but it is amusing seeing vehicles coming from 5 directions at once with no trafiic lights.. it seems to work itself out though. I bet if lights were put in it would slow the whole junction down rather than speed it up. Sometimes during the rush hour there is one of those totally ineffectual traffic cops trying to direct traffic but being totally ignored by everyone which is somewhat amusing. If he'd get out the way it'd go a little smoother in the morning rush.
