I've been in Korea for 6 months and I'm in dire need of a laptop.
I'm not allowed to use the computer at work anymore.
I plan to be in korea for many years but want a laptop in order to travel!
Alright...What should I look for in specs?
I'm wanting to pay 750,000 max for a laptop (not a mini)
I'd use it to chat online, and surf the net. That's about it.
I do have Diablo 2 that I'd be playing though.
So...what can I get for a decent price in Korea?
Any good websites? |

I'd like an answer to this as well. I'll need a laptop eventually if I do go to teach in South Korea, and I'm not sure whether to buy here or wait. My friend, who has visited South Korea, said that there are markets where you can haggle over the price of electronics, and the base price is lower than the price here in the US to start with. It sounds like buying a laptop in South Korea could save a nice chunk of cash -- is that true? And if so, where are they? |

Its cheaper to buy a PC here and its more expensive to buy a laptop whether it be used or new. I would highly suggest you buy a laptop in the US. Both of the laptops I bought here used had bad hard drives that I had to have replaced and i believe that I got reasonable deals on them for this reason only. |

Buy a laptop in the USA.
I highly recommend you take a look at HP laptops for sale in the states. Here's an example for comparison:
Korean HP refurbished model for a bit less, but look at the lower specs: CPU, HDD, etc., plus lack of blu-ray:

Oh, wait, but how about a comparable NEW model nearly identical to the Korean one listed above?
USA Price: $699
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9166635&type=product&id=1218041148373
Here's a higher spec model in the USA:
NEW HP Pavilion dv7-1260us Laptop PC - AMD Turion X2 RM-74 2.20GHz, 4GB DDR2, 400GB HDD, Blu-ray DVDRW, 17" WXGA+, Vista Home Premium 64, Bronze
Price in the USA: $919.99

Prices for notebooks were more tolerable (but not as good) in Korea before the won went to poop. They've been pretty horrible since. If you want more premium features, like blu-ray or better internal graphics, you'll pay through the nose here. Also, it's difficult to get a wider selection of premium parts. Case-in-point, if you want blu-ray, you're going to have to go with premium everything, and spend over 2 million won easy for something new, in many cases. |
