Okay, I'm now in Japan. I'm considering buying a multi-system VCR here before heading to Korea in February. Is this a good plan?

I've heard that electronics stuff like this is more expensive in Korea. Should I wait until I get to Seoul and buy one there or should I buy one here and bring it with me? Can anyone give me a price/model for a multi-system VCR there or even a website in Korean where I can find out for myself?

Will I get hammered at customs if I buy one here and ship it in boxed along with the rest of my stuff?

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the opportunity to go to Akihabara in Tokyo on Thursday this week which the electronics mecca of Japan. I'm looking at a Samsung SV-5000W for around W556,000 equivalent. How does that compare?

I've tried searching Korean websites only for that model but drawn a blank?

I'll keep looking for others...

That seems very expensive!! you mean a VCR/DVD combo? You can get a VCR here for 30,000. I got a DVD player for 40,000. I am sure some super combo thing would not be more than 300,000. I think Korea is always cheaper than Japan. I saw Japanese electronics in America for cheaper than I saw in the duty free shop in Tokyo.

Okay, I'll reiterate - I'M after a multisystem VCR i.e. PAL, NTSC SECAM VCR - I'm not interested in DVD capabilities at all. The VCR must input and output in all those modes. The Samsung model I quoted earlier does that. All I need is to find out if this is a) available in Seoul (which I find highly likely) and b) how much it retails for.

I want this so that I can input my NTSC video camera and output PAL tapes to send to relatives in the UK and also receive tapes from them and reverse the process to view their tapes.

Hope that clarifies

I'll look up the price on the internet for that model on a Korean webpage for you.

I am sorry that I could not find that model number. Maybe the model number is different in Korea. That is sometimes true for cell phones too.

Actually, I found the 7000 which is the top of the range model on Samsung's Korean website. It was just shy of 1 million won - no kidding!

I have a feeling that the model I quoted is probably only available for export which means that I would probably not do badly by buying it here and bringing it over.

Thanks for your help anyway dragon. Smile
