I've wondered the same thing a few times. One day, I got off the subway at Hannam station to go eat and drink at Bar Merhaba. There was a dark-skinned 25ish Arab guy with a long beard and wearing a white cap, sandals, and a toga who also got off at the same station, probably to go to the mosque or hang out with his buds. I thought he looked really cool and admired how he was unique and bold enough to do his own thing, but I also wondered what job he does in Korea, because he's obviously not working at a hagwon. I mean, can you imagine some of the moms tripping out and shitting a gold brick if they saw him working at their kid's hagwon?

that was our very own fromtheuk - aka fromthewaziristan, waziristan for short.
I'd bet if you talked to him you'd be impressed with his self professed "posh" British accent.
but he works in the public schools, not hogwans |

A toga? Had you gone back in time to Ancient Rome? |

Adding on to all of this one of my students recently saw a TV show about foreigners in Korea. Nearly every South American country was represented as well as nonEnglish-speaking European countries. They're at Korean universities or starting work, same as any other country. I've met a few Africans who weren't from South Africa. If the Japanese and Chinese immigrants were more distinguishable they'd probably outnumber them all.
I don't think the initial post was racist, if you've scanned the job boards the hagwons are still openly looking for young white female Christian harpists. Even some public school postings have some age and gender preferences for jobs where the person must be skilled and professional more than anything else (counseling). |
