I just saw the Korean movie "Yongwanchonchongbok" about the English Institute and teaching English in Korea. It was quite funny, and the Australian who played the part of the English teacher did a pretty good job. Only problem was that she spoke good Korean. Students spoke to her in Korean and she answered back in Korean. Of course the class then proceded as a normal English class with the usual funny English responses and so on. Maybe it's trying to make a point though that perhaps we can be more effective if we speak, and understand Korean.

As the story unravels we get to see a lot of Korean culture at it's funniest, worst and best. The Korean star gets to meet his sister who was adopted as a baby to a family in the US. In the class room setting we also see how a female student wants to sit next to the star, and how she eventually shows that she is quite fluent in English. It's uncanny to see how she can switch to being the unknowing, I don't understand English, Korean bimbo to a very fluent in English all comprehending young lady.

Anyone know who played the part of the teacher? Was she imported for the part?

I saw the movie too. The English title is "Please Teach Me English". I actually saw the video. I don't know iff it's on DVD yet. When I was pickimg it up I asked the shop owner about it, and he said the Korean actor and actress were quite popular. He didn't say anything about the English speaking actors and actresses.

Did notice that the lead English speaking role used good Korean. I was quite impressed with her pronounciation, and fluency.

I don't remember her name, but I recall she said that she really respected Koreans for learning a second language, because she herself doesn't. I'm sure that she had a very good speach coach to help her.

As for teaching using Korean- I've been actively told not to in the classroom.

watched it on DVD the other day.. oncein Korean.. once with the subtitles turned on. Some funny parts but nothing too special. Decent though.

So the Ozzie can't actually speak Korean? seemed slick to me.

acually she couldnt speak that well at all!!!
she had basic skills.. and her pronunciation was bad!!!
also when you shoot a scene you memorize your lines!!
she goes over her lines with the dialect coach. and she memorizes her lines for that scene!
not difficult at all!!!!

I hope this opens up korean HAKWON owners minds.. SEE big korean movie. with an AUSSIE!!!! teacher!!! not north american!!

Actually my director has given me the goahead to speak korean to the kids. Usually I don't speak in full sentences (I can, but I choose not to), I give them vocabulary words when they need them. Sometimes sentences. I am just not ready for them to ask me questions in Korean. I can't fully understand.

Guess I'm lucky like that. Sometimes it really helps rather than trying to explain something...just write some hangul on the board and move onto the next word.

Just wondering if this movie would be out in the U.S. so I could watch before I come over.

Not to sound self-centered (but I am American and maybe that can't be helped...) Wink I was surprised they chose an Australian girl to be in the movie as well, starring as the English teacher. Was she the best for the part, or did the director want nothing to do with Americans and chose someone else?
I heartily agree that hagwan owners should pay attention to this movie, as Itaewon guy has so exuberantly already said.

I'm downloading it now off Overnet. Three cd rips, 2.1 GBs...is it worth it? Is this the English version, I hope?

Is that the Australian girl they show on the cover? She looks Korean? Maybe it's
the sister?

Man I love this Overnet, especially living in Korea. I left it on last night and when I woke up I had:

Pink Floyd - The complete collection!
Mystic River
Monster
Lost in Translation
The Man Without a Past
And several full feature "action" movies Wink

Kazaa sucks.

You're talking about the ACE Dvd rip, right? The quality is good, but there are no subs. The .smi sub files of the same name are only Korean subs.

The DVD has been out for a couple of weeks.

The actress is Lee Nayoung, who is the Korean Laneige model.
