Sorry to spoil your thread mate, but, WTF are you thinking here? ?
Foreigners have a hard enough time here as it is without shitheads like you trying to start up a thread for advice on doing something pretty darn nasty. In case someone might find find themselves in a "pinch" you should find another job and quit. Be a man about it.
Why would anyone pay back their flight, then run away at night? kind of defeats the purpose of doing a midnight run wouldn't you say!!!
You should clean your apartment, and leave some food for the next person, and also tell immigration fully what you are doing......
Silliest thing I have ever read on Dave's in my two and a bit years here.

I took off without paying anything after only 5 days, but I also worked for those five days for no pay. The Wart owed me money, if any was owed to anyone.
3. What do you say at immigration? Will they think it's sketchy that you have a year visa and are leaving Korea on the whim? Will the school try to stop yoou?
I didn't say shit. I simply handed the guy my passport, he took a gander at the E2 visa, gave me a dirty look, and handed it back to me.
I would appreciate any stories from those who have done it. What were your circumstances? Did the school try contacting you in the western world when you returned? Did they stalk you for the airfare money they gave you to come there?
My wart owner told me a big ol' fib.
No one tried to contact me.
No one pestered me for the flight reimbursement.
I had no problems getting another E2 after the original one expired. If I would have tried to get another before it expired, I may have had problems and would have probably been forced to compensate for the plane ticket. But I would have demanded pay for those five days, too.
I thought this thread might be useful to anyone who suddenly finds themselves in a pinch and needs emergency information.
One never knows when his boss will turn into a monster. The midnight runner is always there if one needs to do it.

My first crummy coworker did the midnight run right under my nose- took off literally the day after her first payday. got some 45 year old kiwi meathead to help her with her run, who then emails her recruiter that she left "unexpectedly" and she emails the next day about her "father who is gravely ill."
but her mistake? she used my notebook, and I used the Google archiver to put together what REALLY happened. on archieved pages of her email, she criticized the school and me, and how much she hated it here.
On the plus side, she got signed up for various pornographic services online. so hopefully if she gets a bit randy in Scotland, she'll be able to scratch that itch!  |

When you do the midnight run you have to run fast. Do not carry many things because it will slow you down. Immigration might catch you.
It is best to do it at midnight when the moon is rising. I checked the calendar and your best time to run was on May 9th. So I suggest you make the mad dash on June 7th. Immigration cannot run fast when the moon is full so you will be safest then. |

| Just pack and leave. No need to say anything at immigration - it's an employment contract not slavery. If you owe money, make arrangements to pay it back (unless you're a complete sheet). |

Yeah, true, but think of all the the rookies that have come in since the thread before this one was posted. Rookies that have replaced a whole bunch of quitters. We need to keep the rookies updated, right? Sure, those threads could be found if the rookies simply made an effort, but by not making an effort to search, they're simply mirroring the lack of effort shown by their students, which explains why the vets quit in the first place.

The more things change the more they stay the same. |

Absolutely. This is why if you do a runner, you'll still be invited to my birthday and New Year's eve parties. I won't shun you and claim here that you're worse than Hitler just because you fled an abusive boss. |

I'm all for FTs trying to be diligent and responsible. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say I try to go the extra mile for my school, and I love working here.
However, there are a lot of places that quite frankly deserve runners. I would have done it from my first job had I wanted to work in another country. You simply CANNOT leave 95+% jobs here on good terms if you decide you should move on because you really don't like your job. I tried my best with my first employer and in the end I had to blackmail him to get released after giving 30 days notice as per law. I would not have felt the least bit guilty about leaving him high and dry come Monday morning. I couldn't even consider doing that to my current school, but there are other places of employment that really deserve it. |

If we were allowed to own our visa and work and live where we wanted, this wouldn't be an issue. Korea is bringing it on themselves by chaining teachers to one school.
In a free system, the good schools would reward the good teachers, and the bad schools would have to deal with the bad teachers. There is no way to know what you get in the current system. It's a crap shoot. If it doesn't work, what alternative do you have? |
