that is why many "enlightened" countries have prostitution laws that make it perfectly legal, but illegal for trafickeering and pimps, 2nd parties. etc.
Brazil comes to mind.
it's funny (or sad) how the cops never really crack down on the pimps, etc, and instead focus on the girls/women.
I would set up very harsh penalties for traffickers, pimps and other such assorted scum and act on them instead of merely having the law on the books.
there is one thing you said that's interesting though - family debts that the girl often steps in to clear.
I've run across this phenomenon, but typically the girl does this of her own free will , meaning out of the sense of obligation to her family.
just as in other places they do it to support their families, even extended ones.
Lack of better paid, more pleasant choices isn't innately the fault of prositution, however.
In a McJob world (think McJob in developing country standards on top of it) it's no surprise many Thai Isaan girls prefer to work the go-go rather than break their backs in the rice paddy under a sweltering sun for 10 hours a day.
if you're correct about the red light districts, I'd raze them and promote the barber shop/massage places |

I've made no secret my love for love motels. They are a hell of a bargain and they surpass what's rivaled at these so-called "tourist hotels."
In the US there certainly are motels, and ones used for similar purposes as Korea. Unfortunately they're also used as narcotic shooting galleries, and I'm glad Korea is spared that burden. |

You're probably right, but how is that different from any other job? |

the Western surprise.. or faux moral outrage.. or whatever you want to call it at the existence of love motels is preposterously funny.
what these IDIOTIC MORONS do not realize is that love motels are ubiquitous the world over. Latin American cities have even a higher per capita amount of them than Korea.
what these IDIOTIC MORONS also do not realize is WHY they exist.
they exist because people want to fornicate.... (yes despite what your mother and your preacher told you.. sorry.. it's true )
The rest of the world doesn't have the kind of housing options available in the US. Many people stay with their parents until marriage... or can't afford a place of their own.... families tend to live together.. there is a decided lack of PRIVACY.
hence.. the reason for the existence of love motels..
is this sudden realization a reason for writing a stupid stupid article (like wow... look at those love hotels.. ) |

only when Korea bashing posts (which I'm not innately opposed to, at times they're quite warranted) CONTINUALLY focus on stupid and nonsensical matters like prostitution and love motels.
as I mentioned, love hotels come only as a surprise to Americans, who are used to their own apartments and other places like cars.. classrooms , confessionals and other places to fornicate.
everywhere else in the world, especially in developing countries with a housing shortage, or lack of affordability of housing , those countries have love motels.
the ones in Caracas were always particularly busy during long lunch breaks... ah the advantages of having hot secretaries |

As a former journalist, I find it absolutely hilarious that the public gets angry about the love motel story (factual,) yet the public doesn't demonstrate any outrage for the countless stories that are patently false, such as the mad-cow "epidemic" in the US or the "English teachers are all drug dealers" stories in the Korean media. It seems that a false story that depicts Korea in a good light is always ok, but a factual story that depicts reality, is worthy of death-threats.
For there to be outrage about what foreigners are saying to other foreigners is just wacky.
I wouldn't wear my Gwangju News t-shirt around.. Beware, I'm sure VANK is going to be all over this one.. |

That was a good piece, I'm pleasantly surprised. Not your typical Korean. |

last time I checked, prostitution also involved consenting adults.

Tell that to the girls |
are you suggesting all working girls are "forced" to work as working girls?
or some choose that option because it's "better" for them (while others do not)
or are you suggesting that only Korean working girls aren't working of their free will?
or are you one of those loons who claims each and every prostitute never works based on her own free will? |
emm....I'm saying that I know for a fact that most of the girls are forced into doing it. I know this because a Korean acquaintance of mine owns about a dozen of the places in the red-light zone near where I live.
I occasionally have drinks with the guy, he speaks decent English, and he has told me all about the business. At his places, there isn't a single girl there out of free will.
I'm not a women's rights advocate, I'm not outraged either, and there's virtually nothing I can do about it either. I'm not best friends with this guy, but I do see him from time to time and we usually chat about family, business etc.
He's a pretty normal guy, except for the fact that he imports girls from other Asian countries to work as hookers. He also uses his contacts in those rip-off money-lending companies you see on TV to force Korean women to work for him. Often for the girls, it's their father or brother than has run up the debt and they have to step in to clear it.
He will even offer me a freebie whenever we get a few drinks into us.
As for the Love Motels, yes, some of their raison d'etre is to service the market for young couples who don't have any other place to go, but they get far more older couples who are cheating on their respective spouses.
In any conservative country where virginity is highly valued, there is always a thriving prostitution racket going on. The girls you see in "Sexy" bars, Massage places, No-Rae Bangs and Barber shops (most of whom will sleep with you for the right money) may well be doing it of their own free will, but 99% of the girls in the red-light zones are NOT.
As for the girls doing it "willingly", I'd still bet that most of the money goes to their boss. |
Your first two paragraphs are pure BS. Why lie so blantantly on a forum just to defend a one-liner you thouhgt was funny but got shot down? |
