So, my first vacation is coming up in July. My contract lists 10 days for vacation, broken into two 5 day segments. I was speaking with one of the managers at my school and he informed me that my summer vacation would be July 29 - August 2. The only thing is, two of those days 5 days fall on Saturday and Sunday, days of the week I never work on. Is this normal?

From my perspective, and previous employment experience, vacation does not include days you normally do not work. Can anyone offer me some good feedback regarding this?

I don't know if this is "good feedback", but that's just one of the ways hogwan owners try to rip-off their employees.

What's the exact wording in your contract re: vacation?

What are we supposed to say? Well, I'll give it a go. First check your contract...did it say 10 business days or just 10 days? If it's the latter, then you could be SOL. Next, clarify it with your boss. Play dumb and tell him you thought you could get a week off instead of just a long weekend. Maybe he'll say "oh sorry, my mistake". If he doesn't play along, then write to Dave's and tell us about it.

This 10 days vs. 10 business days thing is nice to know. One thing myself and many others learned long ago is that assumption is the mother of all ........ you know. Good luck.

My contract says 10 days, but my contract lists me only working Monday through Friday. I plan on having a meeting with the director of my school next week, along with my recruiter, about some specific points in the contract.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I would compromise and don't say anything. Ok, it's a forced compromise, but I doubt the hagwon owner will fight it (after the fact, lol).

If you can't reschedule those 2 days, don't make a big thing of it. Just don't show up on Monday. You will have one of those 2 days and give up one day. If he complains, make your argument then (after the fact).

Would he really fire you for that one day (which also could be chalked off as a sick day)? He could, but he would be wasting more days just to do it. It's not worth working at a school with that kind of hagwon owner anyway.
