Anybody get this in school? I'd be curious to read the rest of the article. An excerpt from the article "Intoxicated native English teachers":
Quote:
...disgruntled 12-year-old student who requested *anonymity said, I cant believe my parents are working hard to send me to an English hagwon where a teacher could possibly be a drug user. Another student said that she wishes the government would do a thorough background check on native English teachers prior to granting employment.

The article's here, but it's pay-per-view.

Anyone with an account want to pass the article along?

11-year-old Minho said 'I like Babo-teacher, he many game play'. 13-year-old Seonmin remarked 'Carissuh-teacher is kind and sometime give candy, but not play many game'. 10-year-old Mingyeong, however, stated 'Mike-teacher no give candy, no play game, only give paper. He I no like'.

Yeah, I'm possible recreational drugs use was right on elementary hagwon kidss minds.

That's a very lucid thought for a 12 year old. I'm surprised he even knows what a background check is. Unless it has something to do with Super Junior or games, I doubt kids give a crap.

Drug using teachers aren't a good thing (if it affects job performance) but what about the Soju-blasted hungover teachers (both Korean and native.)

I'm guilty of having taught while carrying around a liter bottle of water.. Although those reindeer games were long ago, it's still pretty common for everyone in this country to come to work still sauced from the prior night's soju bender..

Smee, wanted to reply to your site, but it is so dang complicated- near impossible.

Anyway, those quotes are totally bogus! Some writer just made it up for another evil English teachers story.

More FAIL!

So it is in the Junior Herald? Not familiar with it. It's for kids?
Sounds like they are trying plant these ideas in the kids heads by using fake quotes as opposed to actually interviewing and quoting accurately.

Man, these idiots really have it out for us!

Bencio, it's not impossible. I explained how to sign up back in April for people unfamiliar with blogspot blogs.

Those quotations could very well be made up, and it would be consistent with what I'm seeing now all over the media. Doesn't mean the Junior Herald is less stupid for printing it. I'm not going to sit here and say people shouldn't worry who their teachers are, or that all NSETs are top-notch. But to smear a whole demographic, tens of thousands of people, based on the arrests of a handful of teachers is irresponsible and xenophobic. That goes without saying, of course, and we all know that here. Yet people in the media still think it's okay, and I'll bet will hide behind "Oh, it's only 'some' teachers who do this," or "not all teachers are bad." It deserves a response.

Bencio, yes, the Junior Herald is for kids, run by the Korea Herald.

No, sadly we don't all know that here. Every day some idiot will say that they were shoved, therefore all Koreans are rude. Their boss cheated them, so all Koreans are dishonest. Some Korean yelled at them so all Koreans are racist. A huge chunk of this board is made up of idiotic complaints like this yet relatively few of those haters are called on it.

dunno...the story has some truth to it. everytime i'm in hongdae, it's predominantly the fellow foreigners who are looking to score some goods. i've been asked multiple times as i guess i look like a supplier (...i'm not).

Madoka, please don't compare a message board made up of adults with a "newspaper" that is READ by Korean children to help them learn English-ee. Rolling Eyes

So, which is it? A manufactured quote or a real quote that is misused by the editor?
Oddly, I see both possibilities. The pics are clearly added by the Editor, so the comments could have been written by the editor.

BUT, a 12 year old Korean kid MAY have repeated what that child has heard many times from Mommy, Daddy, Ajumma, and other Koreans. At my first hagwon, I had kindie kids tell me to "Stop drinking too much soju" and "Stop raping Korea girls." Wanna guess where they heard these BS lies about foreigners? Mommy, Daddy, Ajumma, and other Koreans. Rolling Eyes

Either way says something bad about Korean society and the Korean media, right Madoka?

See Wylies, you should take flakfizer's advice. No point arguing with me because I am right. He's learned his lesson, so should you. Laughing

Hey, Korea produces some bright kids, even foreign ones who come here. Remember the 9-year-old who responding to how readable and exciting Dr Huer's articles are? She writes at almost a university level. Korean editors have some amazing abilities when it comes to collecting the opinions of kids, I have to say.

A lot of teachers are druggies and a lot of Koreans are racists. How about that?

(thought I would try to hit the middle ground.)
