I have both a car and motorcycle license.

Note: You can own a 50cc (and I think up to 100cc) scooter with only a regular drivers license. My current scooter is a 125cc. Saving up for an R6 or a ZX-6R sportbike, but loving my cheap scooter so much, I might not get a sportbike -- never thought I'd say that!

I want to get a bigger bike some day, so I got a license for the bigger bikes. It was heck to go thru, because I didn't take the test (my USA license worked). If you are a soldier, you can get it all done on base easily, I'm told. I posted how I got mine in another thread. Too big a hurry to explain now.

I have a large motorcycle Korean license..I'll give you the 411 on it.

If you have a Canadian driver license, you can show your card at the DMV and they will fill some forms out and give you a Korean one. You will need some photos and a ridiculous exam..but it takes less than 30 min.

You can drive a car with it..but not a truck. You can drive a motorcycle upto 125cc with a car license.

If you want to ride a bigger bike, you need to either pass the test at the DMV or goto a school "as I did" and practice on their Honda CB400 on the course until you get the timing right to make it through. You can only make 1 error on the course. Of the last 62 who tried during my test, 2 passed...I was the last and everyone wanted to see if I could pass...

The Lvl 2 permit lets you ride anything above 125cc. I've been pulled over a few times and the police asked me for my permit...and usually are surprised that I have one. Even w/o a helmet..they tend to appreciate that you went through the trouble to be legal and you won't get a ticket for no helmet if you're just going 2km from home. That doesn't mean you know "how" to ride a bike. Alot of the groups ride bigger bikes with no plates, no insurance and no license. They get awayy with it until they have an accident...then they are pretty much fucked.

Any bike above 50cc will require a plate and insurance. My insurance on my CBR cost me 68,120won for the year for liability. You don't need collision since the rules of the road state that when a car his a bike..the car is automatically at fault (I learned this when I got hit by a truck and I was in the opposite lane). You will need it in case you hit a pedestrian. It's illegal to not have insurance..and if you have an accident and hurt someone..you will have to pay out of pocket or goto jail until you do..your insurance is a good cover for this.

No plate..you're screwed (no insurance). Being legal is cheap...

If you have an accident with a 50cc bike an no insurance...you pay out of pocket if you hit a pedestrian, the car will pay for you if he hits you.

Best advice I can give you: Buy a GOOD set if tires (preferably Metzeler MEz1's) that will stick to the road in both wet and dry. Good rubber is what I consider the most important preventative insurance of all.
