I woke up in the middle of surgery here. Apparently it's not that uncommon but it really sucked. They shot me full of more stuff to make me sleep but I was too tense so I didn' t fall asleep again until like an hour later when they gave me a really strong painkillers. |

I'm in the midst of a fairly drawn out ordeal right now. When does it ever end? I wish I would have spent a little extra money and went to an international clinic.
I hope people will read this topic and take the advice everyone has given. My head hurts.. gotta go. |

I went in as a male to have an operation to remove a mole off my inner thigh, and now I'm a female! |

Don't joke like that. I wish I wasn't serious when I say that after this week I'm halfway to womanhood myself. I'll post details later but right now I just ain't up for to it. No puns please. |

I went to a hospital for a cold two days ago.
I wanted to wash my hands in the hospital bathroom, but as usual, there was no soap. I decided to wait til after I left to buy a bottle of water because the water dispenser only had those little flat paper envelopes that you have to open up in order to use. Doesn't anyone think that touching a surface with your hands is not good a idea if you're going to be touching it with your mouth moments later?
Korea could probably save billions of won in lost productivity and medical costs by banning those worthless things and requiring that some institutions have soap in their bathrooms. |

there are plenty of good doctors in korea... do some research.
the bottom line is that you don't pay $1000/month for your health insurance. and you will never have to sell your home to pay the medical bills. |

Ashland...u do realise that sooooo much is NOT covered in any way by NHI? Most Koreans have supplementary insurance for these things.
As for recommendations.....well I just had a really serious wrong diagnosis from someone 3 people recommended so not sure exactly how much more research it is poss to do. |

It's called getting a second opinion. And here I would gather a third as well, especially for something serious. |

When my wife was giving birth, they decided to help things by pushing down on her stomach. They forced the baby down the birth canal sideways any my wife was in agony. After a while I got handed a phone: "You sign paper or wife die. Ok?"
That, along with a bunch of other crap they threw at us made what should have been the best day of my life the most horrifying thing I have ever been through. You can read the whole sorry saga here
The push down on the stomach, sideways baby, emergency C-section thing happened to a mate of mine too. It seems to be common practice here. |

Korean dentists SUCK.
Or maybe not all of them, but...
Fillings from Korea fall out WAY too fast, but this is not my real problem.
My jaw got broken. I went to two big hospitals, both famous and in Seoul. The first said I had to get surgery and a metal pin/plate set up. The second said they could fix it with physical training (wired it shut, then resistance training with pins into the jaw bone and rubber bands). Since the first would have screwed up my semester very badly (one week in the hospital, etc) and they couldn't even take me for five days, I went with the second. Now I have a misaligned jaw, only four teeth meet, and my expensively braces-fixed overbite is more severe than before I ever got braces. In America I am told I need to get it broken again, more than likely, but first they have to try braces again-- which aren't covered under my lousy PhD student dental plan, and are WAY too expensive.
Oh, and I had to learn how to make sounds come out properly again. At first even my mom couldn't tell it was me on the phone. Even today I have a very unavoidable and annoying sibillant ssssss that I can't seem to get rid of but never had before. I get pain in the jaw, and the stress of chewing on only two sets of teeth has started causing other issues (cracking, etc.) all around my mouth, so that since this I've had to get five major dental procedures just to make sure I still had a chewing surface, and i have un-crowned root canals on the side that doesn't meet b/c it doesn't make sense to make an expensive crown that might not fit after I get my jaw realigned (someday). |
You had a bad experience. There are crappy dentists. However, on the whole when compared to their NA counterparts, I say they are way better. The person who did your jaw isn't a dentist btw. If it was, you got the royal screw. I wanted my jaw reset and my dentist told me it would require a plastic surgeon and 10mil won. Needless to say I didn't want to spend the cash. Since yours was already broken, you saved 10mil but it looks like you got what you paid for...
My biggest complaint on Korean dentists is you have to TELL them to use tons of meds when they drill. Koreans are nuts and will get drilled without being frozen first I once saw an adjuma getting the drill and her legs where shaking like she had stuck her finger into an outlet. |

Been there! Going back on Wednesday. Can't wait! I believe electroshock therapy feels much better than dentistry with a chainsaw and chisel. |

Korean dentist A: "you have 8 cavities, 4 are bad. I suggest 8 fillings"
Kurtz " OK, I'll think about it, I don't have time now"
Kurtz seeks 2nd opinion
Korean dentist B "your teeth are fine, but change your cleaning method"
Kurtz "OK" |

I think it goes back to ten years ago when anyone in Korea could be a doctor -thing.
This is a country that, 5 years ago did not have a food and drug administration.
I know a doctor in korea can not practice in the west. (thank the [Mod Edit] lord).
We (those of us in korea) are in a baby nation.
The doctors are third world, as is the med care.
If I had to, I'd go to China and get an operation before having it done here.
I taught a doc who was a pain management specialist. He thought fentanyl and methodone were amphetamines. And, he sticks by this now- even after I showed him proof otherwise.
things that make you go ...hmmmm |

Sorry to hear of the troubles everyone is having here. I always tell people to make sure they find a doctor they can trust and communicate properly with.
There are different levels of care available here in Korea, but I disagree with anyone who can writeoff an entire profession in a single country due to his own limited experience.
There are some good hospitals in Incheon (Gil and Inha University hospital)
I have posted on this site many times and I think I have helped out more than a few people by recommending my hospital and other centers for medical care. Please feel free to contact me in the future for any help you may need. |
