Oh, the worst, farmers' blow to punctuate the middle of a conversation, kinda like a biomass expletive:
I hate it when the boss...
[left lean down-wind,
turn,
cock one nostril with left finger,
blow,
surreptitiously wipe nose while motioning dramatically to flick remaining detritus from hand onto immediate ground]
...takes out his shit on us for his [blah, blah, blah, blah, blah]
I take a step back and immediately remember that I had to run home to bludgeon my thumb with a ball-peen hammer. And, leave with my excuse given. |

That's fine with me but you wrongly attributed that quote to me.
lithium wrote that! |
My apologies. I'm struggling with a bad head cold at the moment and simple quoting is obviously beyond me... |

Sleepy in Seoul: Why on earth would I want to be informed about what is happening in the U.S.A., real or otherwise? I can think of lots of things I could do with my time rather than listen to details of a country I've never been to, will never go and don't like. I'd rather have my tongue beaten wafer-thin with a steak tenderiser and then stapled to the floor with a croquet hoop.
Lithium did indeed write that and it was directed at me. He must have assumed I was American. He was correct. Nice work brother!!

Yes. You may want to clear the fecal matter out of your mellon. It seems to be pouring out of your mouth. Another donkey spewing anti-American sentiment.
Xerxes:What is the best MP3 player.
Your best bet is to go with an iPod. I forget which one I have. It's second from the top. You can store alot of music, movies etc. It may cost you 2-3 hundred, but it is worth it.
I love it when people state anti-American sentiment. It's just like the female who verbally states the hatred of a particular male on a constant basis. The truth is right there! |

Say it ain't so Joe, say it ain't so. You're too smart for that! Conservative talk radio is the biggest source of misinformation there is!! I actually thought lithium was joking! |

It doesn't matter to me what Lithium uses his MP3 player for. If he's a flamming conservative, so be it. Me, I am a mixed bag as I believe most people are. I lean more towards the liberal side though. Sometimes I fall over. Not good.
I thought Lithium was serious. Oh well. I have stated this before and I guess I will again for the hell of it. When communicating via typing/reading, you loose that face to face or voice tone element which I believe leads to the greater chance of a misunderstanding.
My co-teachers and the other teachers in my school are fantastic for the most part. I just use my MP3 alot because of all the Hanguelian cackling that goes on. I rarely hear the MMMMMMMMMM or anything similar in my office when my head phones are off. Maybe I keep them on too much. Nice!! |

At least I'm only an ass, not an arse. There's a wonderful new invention you may have heard of called a 'dictionary'. Try it sometime. |

All the sounds people make when engaged in communication, all the uh-huh's and the mmm-mmm's etc etc, any sounds which are signs of ackowledgement which are not actual words, are called paralanguage.
Women tend to make them more often than men as well, as they tend to be more attentive and wish to show it.
Chances are the Korean isn't completely aware of her paralanguage. I will just about guarantee she doesn't know how much it bothers you or others.
Bring it to her attention and make her think consciously about the sounds she makes.
"I really like the way you use paralanguage to show you're listening to other people when they are talking to you."
K, "What is paralanguage?"
Explain it to her. Thus she knows what it is, when and why she does it. This might make her tune in to it herself thereby causing her to think before she utters a sound, and maybe, just maybe...stopping!
Or...they could have a good old Korean competition and see who can out paralanguage the next person!
That might make it funny. For awhile |

I find this type of stuff interesting, but then again I was a communication major.
Lately I have been wondering if there have been any studies done on the "fake laugh", and the role it plays in communication. It usually gets slammed as being a nervous tic or an affectation, but if you think about it, the great majority of us do it, some way more than others. But why do we do it?
Any thoughts on the subject , friendoken? |

That's an excellent post, but I would never have the heart to bring up the subject. |

I feel your pain. Fortunately, I rarely hear anything that is going on in the office I share with 12 K-females and 1 K-male. An MP3 player is the single most inportant element in my life next to atmospheric oxygen.
NEVER EVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!! NEVER.
To anybody surfing this board prior to entering this country, BUY THE BEST MP3 PLAYER YOU CAN AFFORD, PERIOD. You will polish it every night. |
I concur with your philosphy, but add the following information. Listen to Conservative talk radio and your day will not only be more tolerable (until you hear what the liberal are doing), but you will be informed about what is really happening in the USA. |
LMAO. You're kidding, right? |

I was a communication major as well. I find it fascinating. It is amazing how many people feel they communicate effectively and how so very few actually can.
I haven't read any studies on the fake laugh. I can think of a couple of categories: 1) the sarcastic fake laugh, 2) the insincere fake laugh, 3) the "I don't really get it but everyone else is laughing so I will too" fake laugh for starters.
I will take a look on Google Scholar to see if anyone has written anything on it. Nonetheless, I think the fake laugh is a fully conscious action as opposed to a fair bit of paralanguage being subconscious. It always seems at least a tad out of place doesn't it? |

Well, since most of us do it, I was hoping it adds some value to the communication process, something along these lines:
fake laughter can smooth interactions, open people up, maybe even facilitate real laughter, from this article:
http://research.binghamton.edu/discovere/topstories/Undergraduate_sees_laughter_s_serious_side.shtml
I would add that it may cue others to when it is appropriate to laugh. |
