A slave to what? Programmers whom are part of this economy as us or any other individual? Sure it's easy to demonize somebody, or someone you don't know.

If you want the program, one should pay for what they use. A carpenter does not steal his tools to make a living.

If you don't want to buy MSO, just use Open Office.

I'm going to re-recommend Google Docs. Does 90% of what you need.

I'm sure the programmers are top notch blokes getting a top notch salary. However I'm neither of those. Blah, blah, economy this, economy that, I am not the reason the economy is shit, so stop your lecture. I've paid my dues, had several copies of the different incarnations of windows and office. However now I've opened my eyes to the myriad of free and efficient software that is available, most of it legal. Yet if you are a microsoft fanboy but can't or won't cough up the outrageous price tag then getting a warez version is your best option. Believe it or not nobody owes microsoft anything.

Not talking about the global recession at all.

But, do you steal the hardware you use stolen programs on?

I'm not saying torrenting is all bad. But if I use something professionally, such as word processing, I'll obtain it in a morally way. Whether through freeware or just paying for what I use.

I guess my 'morally way' is different to yours. Microsoft is not a particularly moral company, it's been accused of monopoly, price fixing and they have stifled software development immensely over the years. Do as you would be done by, perhaps?

Half the fun of using the internet in the 90s for me was warez, how to get new software, which wasn't easy, and the communities around the file sharing. I barely used most of the software I managed to get my grubby mitts on. However what I did use I learnt a lot from, yet if my only option was to buy the software I wouldn't have ever used it. Thus I wouldn't have learnt anything.

Open Office is a good alternative if you dont need Access.

Also, ThinkFree is Microsoft compatible and only $49.

I've used their online version for a while and it works fine. Download the trial for free to check it out.

Is ThinkFree still free to use online?

Personally I use a combination of Openoffice and Google docs (with Google gears for ofline work) and no complaints so far. I would use Thinkfree online if I had any issues with the above programs.

I feel bad for people who pay an incredibly rich and devious corporation founded on the greed of the corporate 80's $280 for a piece of software.........

.........I'll happily teach my kids to not throw away their money at rich corporations when they don't have to..........but if they ever try to steal a candy-bar from the local mom and pop store, I'll come down on them like a ton of bricks.......

It's fine to let your kids not buy overpriced software. But if it's overpriced, don't buy it. There are plenty of cheaper, or free, alternatives out there.

When you don't buy the cheaper, or get the free software, you just helping the large software companies as much as if you bought the software in the first place.

Which brings me to my first point. You can't justify stealing if your using the app as a professional.

Don't get me wrong though, torrenting is great, if used with some respect for various industries.

@Ekul, I agree microsoft sucks at software development. So why are you using them? Apple makes much more advanced and superior operating systems(one with out DLL's), why don't you check them out? And if they are too much for you, why don't you just use Lynux? Why justify stealing when there are plenty of cheaper superior and cheaper alternatives out there. [/quote]

Personally I don't agree with apples over priced hardware systems, which has always put me off any of their software. Take for example the iPod, being forced to use iTunes just to update or even upload music to it is criminal imo. The shuffle is the worse, I received one as a present only to find out I could it would work on one version of iTunes at a time.

I also resent being forced into having a copy of windows when I buy a new laptop. I really want an asus eee pc 1000he but they only come bundle with windows xp, i'd rather save the $50 and install unbuntu which is free and perfect for a netbook.

One last gripe is that so many programs only work on windows, if they didn't have such a monopoly for such a long while then developers would create software for all platforms. Hell even crappy IE is still the dominant browser.

Another quick point, copying isn't stealing Wink
