Which area can you get nice polo shirts and slacks as well as button up short sleeve shirts and shorts. I need more clothes for work but don't want to pay 2-3 times what I would back home in the states. Is this a lost cause? I was wondering specifically about the areas of Myongdong, Dongdaemun, and Namdaemun. Sorry, the spellings of these places is probably wrong but I am sure you get the idea. Thanks. |

I'd say Dongdaemun is your best bet...
Myeong-Dong is full of chain stores so there's no real bargain to be had... its the same as going to CoEx or somewhere like that...
Namdaemun... well, I saw some clothes there... but nothing to shout about... seemed to be a market full of wallets, leather goods, foods etc...
Dongdaemun has a number of indoor mall areas full of market stalls... I forget the specific name of the place, but there's a couple of 5 / 6 storey buildings very near the station... super cheap... but then again, quality is not that great |

for name brand authentic items...definitely buy in the states. if you have a century21 near you, that's your best bet. once you come here, forget about paying name brand (you'll spend lots more). however, as the poster above mentioned, dongdaemun isn't that bad. you can also try out stores such as uniqlo and giordano. they are reasonably priced (similar to gap prices).
i also try to hit some outlets when i have the chance...once you arrive, ask how to get to newcore (at the gangnam express bus terminal) or yuhjoo outlet mall (a bit outside seoul). |

I haven't been to Korea yet but when I was in the Navy, the sailors told me that Korea was one of the best places to go shopping because there were so many factory defects at amazing cheap prices. I don't know if those are still around, but have you looked into that? |

But they aren't cheap. Just as the Korean consumer is taken advantage of in other respects, so do "outlets" which charge higher than necessary prices.
Outlets in Korea are not what 'outlets' are in other countries, because consumers are naive. Having said that, there is a very small number of real outlets (like Fubu, mind you!), but not worth the trip out there in my opinion.
Sorry, but Korea is no shopping gem for the informed consumer. |
