I've read many people here bought a netbook overseas (where they're cheaper and come with English OS) or they're planning to, or they're having parents/friends buy one and ship it to K-land.

If you're one of those, and your netbook came preinstalled with WinXP Home:

1) How's the hangul working for you? Were there any problems -- any problems AT ALL -- with Asian language support/IME?

See this comment from another site:

Quote:
so, the disk that i got with my netbook isn't the full installation disk - and it is stripped down version of WinXP without these sorts of files - is that right? i think that if that is the case, then it is a poor effort by either MSI (got Wind netbook) or M$ not to do so. someone decided that we wouldn't need language packs and IME.....

is it the case with laptops, notebooks, netbooks, etc - you don't get the full version of the OS installation disk?

talk about progress - I was able to quickly and easily install IME and language packs on the W2K but i can't with this WinXP!?! Not impressed!

2) What are you doing for hangul key characters? Fugly stickers? (aren't they too large, seeing as they're for normal-sized keyboards?) Memorising the keyboard layout?

3) What monthly download limit plan did you go with? I'm thinking I'll get by with the bare minimum (1G). I'll only ever be hours away from a main computer. Really, the netbook is just to field urgent emails at the pub without having to trek out into the darkness in search of a grotty PC bang.

Oh yes,

4) How is the connexion indoors at Korean drinking establishments? (in seoul)

No problems whatsoever. I just added Korean and set it up like any normal XP desktop.

I've got it almost memorized, but I'm still slow.

What limit? I just find hotspots and surf the net. I don't download anything on it, that's what my old desktop at home's for.

as for using it at the pub...not the smartest plan. They're dang convenient, but if you spill something on it, it doesn't help it out much.

Why don't you just get a Korean one and change the language using the info from this thread?

http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=157708

I would doubt getting it sent from overseas would be any cheaper once you factor in the faffing about.

I have an ASUS 1000HE and I installed both Korean and Japanese. The process was no different from a PC or normal laptop. As for the keys, well, that's a whole other kettle of worms. It can be very difficult to get your typing correct if you don't have the keyboard layout already in your head. As for wireless, the Asus 1000HE is awesome.

I've had stickers on my keyboard for a couple years now, and there is nothing fugly about them. They fit the keys quite well and don't overlap with the Fn keys except on the P * key.

Got em from this guy, cheap and they work well http://cgi.ebay.ca/KOREAN-TRANSPARENT-KEYBOARD-STICKERS-WITH-BLUE-LETTERS_W0QQitemZ260297534579QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3c9af12c73&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

I got sick of the Korean XP Home that mine came with, and bought an external DVD drive to install tinyXP. Which has been great except I haven't been able to get east Asian characters displaying properly since the re-install. Oh well.

That's the very one I was thinking of getting. Okay, one of the very two, that and the 1008HA.

I have use them for years as well on laptops, and they usually cover the entire key surface. A perfect fit. But netbook keys are typically 90-93% the size of normal laptop keys.

These ones are not 100% the size of the key..but maybe not as small as 90%.. they're easy enough to trim with an exacto knife though and would look clean.

I stayed away from the 1008HA for several reasons:

1) non-removable battery (if the battery fails you'll have to return the whole unit)
2) I wanted to upgrade from 1GB to 2GB which with the 1008HA is next to impossible
3) The battery life is 2.5 hours longer with the 1000HE (as advertised)

I payed less money for a slightly heavier and thicker machine (still quite tiny) with superior performance and that is very simple to upgrade.

The best way to get a netbook with Korean characters on the keyboard is to buy it in Korea. Then buy an English copy of Windows XP here or if your more adventurous, download a copy.

I'd steer clear of ASUS netbooks, they're cheaper than the other netbooks for a reason. Somebody opened up one of these ASUS netbooks and found the parts were all TAPED together.

I'd pay a little more and go with a 10-inch Samsung or 10-inch HP 2140 (1366 X 768 resolution!).

Really? I've been reading reviews on the Asus Eee H1000E and people can't stop raving about it! Shocked

What's the pimpin'est netbook out there, money no object?
Or maybe, 'money smallish object'.

Hm?

Mind, I don't want gaudy or flashy. And I don't want to "pimp" it myself. Because that's decidedly techie and lower-management.

I want... uhh... the 007 netbook! yeah.

So which one is that?

Yeah, DC is just talking out his rectum. I have the 1000HE and it's awesome. Yeah, it's not the smallest netbook but it is small. It has everything I want, has better performance, and is cheaper than the competition. It is a fingerprint magnet, though...

As for the pimpinest netbook, well, go with the Sony P series. They are very sexy little units but with lower performance than most netbooks.
