You could do far worse for yourself than being stuck in Manila for a day or two. That old Spanish colonial area (Intramuros - I think it's called) is really beautiful. I went to Manila expecting a total third world cesspit like Jakarta or Dhaka or something but it's really not that bad. |

Were you in Makati or something? Some parts of Manila would put Mexico City to shame!
My favorite part was near the US Embassy. A luxurious compound shadowed by a massive shantytown and an Intel fab with a concrete fence and machine gun toting guards. |

That's the area I was in. 5 minutes walk away. Ermita. Home of the skanky LA club and world's biggest inddor shooting range - apparently. *beep* - my dongkasa's burning! |

Have you already got reservations or are you just playing by ear? Too many Koreans go to Boracay and Puerto Gallera for my taste, I leave Korea to get away from Koreans. A cool but somewhat quiet place is Siquijor (sicK-ee-*beep*) and Camiguin is even better. Dakak was really great but it's on Mindinao which has had problems in the past with muslim insurgents. I spent my honeymoon on Siquijor and my wife is from the area around dakak. So that would be my advice. |

Siquijor!! I love hearing what Filipinos have to say about this place!! They are scared to death of that island!! Just makes me want to go more.
I just heard another Siquijor story about how some Manila college girl went to Siquijor with her friend, and was suppose to be sacrificed to their witchcraft or whatever it was. But she escaped, so they made a national movie about her. |

Is that the place with the church with the black Mary statue that is supposedly haunted and wanders the streets at night....?

I just asked, apparently yes!
From other stories, I heard that many witches or something another do many human sacrifices. There are certain rules. If someone taps you on the shoulder, you have to tap them back twice, or you'll be hypnotized by them.
Supposedly there are many 'good' parts of the island, but you can easily walk into a 'bad' part, and be sacrificed. Some of the foods is actually human meat and all the rest.
Its amazing place to talk about WITH Filipinos. Of course none of these things happen to foreigners, but Filipinos are subject to any of them.. hmmmm.. just makes me more curious about the place!
Its a great topic to bring up with Filipinos. |

I went to Palawan and Boracay and prefer El Nido (Palawan).
Palawan is amazingly beautiful.

Yeah, the old timers I met there all wanted to go there. Apparently, the island is dividied into 4 enclaves each with its separate religion. Yes, some of them are shamanistic cannibals. Nice. Speaking of cannibals...Armin Meweis got off today! |

I spent 8 days on siquijor with my wife. She has lots of family there. It was great, laying on the beach, bicycling, snorkling, boating, drinking San Miguel. I saw the ossarium and climbed the witchtree at Balete which seemed to frighten the local kids. Also went into some deep caves with these 9-16 year old guides who carried nothng but candles through the at times water flooded caves. |

Is there a good online site with a map of the country?
I'd like to know where some of these towns are in relation to each other.
I may fly over to Manila for the 3-day weekend coming up the end of next month.

I found a decent map of the islands here:
http://www.ldb.org/phil_map.htm
So how would you get from island to island, by ferry?
I'm sure there are air links from manilla to cebu for example.

I'd like to island hop and hit Boracay, Iloilo, Bacolod, Dumaguette, Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor. Palawan seems interesting as well, heard there were a lot of Vietnamese opening up pho shops on that island. Would be interesting. |

Going alone sucks. I hated Philippines. Being a white guy you won't stop getting harassed for money from the moment you step off the plane. If you go with a group, it's probably like paradise. But going alone is really scary. |
