Hi,
im a big fan of MMA in korea, but primarily watch UFC and K1. I know that Korea seems to really be into K1 and im sure they show that on tv at bars... but do they have bars that show the UFC?
I imagine it would be kinda weird since its on at 10pm eastern time, which is about noon in Korea on sundays lol.
Is it popular in korea? and is it easy to find a bar that'll show the event live?
thanks in advance! |

UFC and K1 fights are not PPV in Korea! All the fights are shown live on standard cable so you can simply watch from home if you like.
There are a few bars that will open in the AM to show big fights. Most of the UFC fights air live here around 11 AM on Sundays, with replays around 9PM and all week long at different times.
People will usually post questions about a fight the week before, and the places that are showing the fight will be listed. |

that is insane!!!!! that'll save me more than $50 a month compared to Canada
I guess the UFC has some sort of contract with a network in Korea? I wasnt going to get cable while I was in korea, but I dont know anymore. Do you know if its on basic cable? or do I have to get some fancy package? |

Remember, the commentary will all be in Korean, so if you're into hearing Rogan and Mike talk incessantly the whole time (like me ) , not that "insane".
I usually stream events online--usually through Justin.tv

it's quite nice. they're shown live on basic cable - so you don't have to buy any fancy packages, etc. also, the channel the fights are shown on is always SuperAction (i believe?), so i'm guessing they have a contract of some kind with the UFC. anyways, overall, it's much easier to watch the actual fights here - but harder to get into things like the The Ultimate Fighter, etc., if those're something you're into. |

this is actually better, because Joe Rogan can sometimes be the most biased commentator in the world. Sometimes I even watch with the volume on mute to get a more unbiased watch.
I usually use streams for boxing events since most of my friends arent into it, but I find its not that reliable because it freezes for about 5 seconds every few minutes |

if you have cable, channel 40 will randomly show the latest or old ones, but dont expect any live one |

The guy in one of the previous posts said that they are shown LIVE on standard cable.
Are you speaking just specifically about channel 40 or in general? |

Are you kidding me? Rogan is one of the best commentators ever and breaks down each and every fight very objectively. Why don't you name a fight in which he was biased? |

I dont know if youre being sarcastic, since the internet doesnt convey sarcasm very well... but im gonna assume youre not and still list a few fights off the top of my head.
personally, its quite shocking that someone thinks he's not biased whatsoever.
The one that comes to mind right away as being so ridiculously biased is probably Gono VS McCrory. If you havent seen it, you should definitely check it out, it will change your mind.
Other guys ive seen him really rooting for is an old fight, Karo Parisyan VS GSP. Ive seen him speak similarly many many times in favour of Karo.
He seems to really like Spencer Fischer as well... I remember him being biased in his fight against Frank Edgar.
Those are the only ones off the top of my head. Dont get me wrong, I like Joe Rogan, but he is hardly the commentator you claim he is. He trains BJJ and its really obvious by the way he overexplains moves that you know the fighter wont pull. He'll see a position and start explaining the gogoplata and he can never really finish cause the guy cant pull it off, or loses position.
I think it would be good if he learnt a bit more about standup. He's really technical about BJJ, but calls any standup shot "wow, he got rocked", "you know that hurt" etc etc. Also, it would be nice if he learnt some names to some Judo throws like the uchimata.... he always says "he just did a crazy judo throw!!!!" I mean, you can see the popularity of Judo rising in MMA...
I know he cant know everything about MMA because there are so many disciplines, but it is his job, and he could branch out a little more beyond BJJ. God knows Goldberg absolutely nothing..... "Travis Lutter, the Michael Jordan of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu" hahahaha |

Alright I'm going to look for the fights you mentioned. I could be wrong. It seems to me that when he says "he just got rocked," he usually is. As far as the holds are concerned, I think he calls them very well. I can't count the number of times he called a hold before it happened. And I disagree that he overexplains.
Of course I grew up watching Howard Cosell, so when you talk about biased announcers, he was in a different world.
As for not using more technical language, that's completely understandable because the UFC is trying to broaden its demographic to more than the 18-50 year old male crowd. He uses language that everyone can understand.
Anyway, you're the first person to mention this about Rogan. UFC 100 is coming soon and that's definitely a fight that will elicit a biased comentators comments.
We'll see |

glad to hear you'll check out the fights. Be sure to check out the Gono/McCrory. That was by far the worst
I agree that the UFC is trying to broaden its audience and doesnt want to get too technical, but I dont think its that. He has no problem pointing out a gogoplata or an anaconda choke which rarely happens.... but never even mentions the most basic of judo throws... even when Karo was fighting Kim (both judo guys)
Im so excited to see UFC100. Theres no guarantee he'll be biased in that event... its not like he overdoes it.... he just seems to do it to specific guys he really likes. I find sometimes that he doesnt like some guys that come from Pride, so maybe he'll be a bit biased against Akiyama (debut in UFC). Thats pure speculation though.
so who are your favourite fighters? Is UFC big in Korea? or are they more into Dream or K1? I cant wait for K1 max on July 13th... thats going to be insane! |
