|
|
| After working 1 year at this school I have found that the administration here tends to take advantage of it's native teacher. I have had to work 2 weeks of winter camp, 1 week of spring camp, and I will be working likely 4 weeks of summer camp. I was told when I was to take my vacation rather close to my vacation period (as in you're taking your vacation now like it or not). I was also told that I didn't have to come in to work, during the winter vacation period when I wasn't doing camps, but then I was made to seem as though I had done something wrong when I had not come in to work for more than the 2 weeks I was allowed for vacation, and that the school was being nice for not getting angry with me. Really I feel this school will attempt to take advantage of you if you let them so be careful. |

| This is a joke thread right? I know people that go in and warm their desks all vacation long other than the 10 vacation days. Most of us teach winter and summer camps. I complain a lot but I wouldn't be if I was in your situation. |

You got 3 or 4 weeks of paid vacation. It sounds like most ps jobs.
To the contrary, I think the school should be warning other employers about you and your self entitled, righteous, cry baby attitude. |

Average ESLER rant, 2003
"Beware this school. The boss made me pay my own fare here, then refused to refund it. I have now worked 3 months without pay, although the wonjangnim keeps me alive by pushing dried gimchi under my door at regular intervals. I am made to perform flashdance in a multicolored suit while having markers thrown at me by the children for 12 hours a day."

I have been given more than my contractual allowance of holdays. I was also told that I didn't have to come in to work, during the winter vacation period when I wasn't doing camps.

You publically bad mouth a school by name that you "think" may be wondering why you didnt come to work on your vacation. When they gave you vacation and seem to be treating you like a Korean Employee.
This is offically the stupidest post I have seen on Daves. |

I think u guys are being a little harsh. The points that stood out to me:
*spring camp = 1 week, hol usually around 2 so fair enough doing a week
*being told when cavation was ok at the last minute. Makes planning difficult and is bad practice. (For the record I work in the typical badly organised PS but I always see the Korean teachers drawing lots for the 3 days of the hols they have to be in school. They get the rest off.
*Being led to believe non camp vacation time was a bonus then made to feel bad for taking it. THIS happened to me. The unofifcial bonus time was part of the sweetener for working rural and I wd never have taken the job without it - tho I didn't ask for it, was on the table from the start. SEE ABOVE for the fact that the K teachers did very little desk warming. There is an official form to complete re 'home study' which is bunkum but easily completed.
*If summer camp is 4 weeks then that would leave very little time over for OPs vacation. |

Valkerie,
MANY teachers have camps, every day during the holidays that they aren't on official vacation.
They give you 4 weeks of camp in Summer, well that means you'll have a long winter vacation.
Now, I don't know the intricate details of the OPs situation, but in my case I have camp everyday I don't take as vacation. Yet I'm proactive about finding the information, and getting my vacation cleared ASAP, so I take my vacation when I want. This comes from experience, which clearly the OP did not have, and will be better informed next time.
Does he have a legitmate gripe to complain to his mom over the phone or buddies in the bar? Sure. Is this serious enough to badmouth the school (naming and shaming). I don't think so.
In the OPs defense, his username appears to be his real name, so he's not hiding behind the internet |

I see this thread as a newbies honest attempt to add something constructive to the board. It appears honest, without hyperbole, and there is none of the usual hate that accompanies posts of this type. So. All hail the newbie. Long live the newbie.
What the newbie doesnt know is that he or she (miss, is your name nathan?) actually has a fair shake, and is simply experiencing....Korea and it's culture.
Then to boomerang, just because we're a bunch of jaded pricks here in Korea (is that a bad word?), it doesn't mean that the OP doesn't actually have a legitimate gripe. He or she does. If someone back in the world were to make me feel guilty abotu me taking my vacation (at the professional level mind you), we would be up in arms. (well, I'd probably tell them to givl off (1 key right )
So, OP. Sorry about your rough go. It's actually not a bad deal. The psychological warfare is just Korea. Get used to it. The day you get cheated out of money, write back and we will all be behind you....or beside you....or somewhere else....getting drunk. or something equally constructive. maybe. but still on your side. welcome to korea. |
