As the subject says, I am wondering how much notice I should give to quit my current public school gig. I'm on a F2 visa and found a better job starting in September. The contract stipulates that I should give 60 days notice but since I have 2 weeks paid vacation in August, I am worried the school might fire me beforehand. I would really like to work through August and get paid for the full month. What do you guys suggest I do??? Thanks.

Since you're on a F-2 visa you can walk out the door now if you want to. However you should give the proper notice that's in the contract if you wish to maintain good relations with your employer and get a good reference. It depends on how good this other job offer is.

I'd go by what the contract says...or try to negotiate an alternate date with the school.

what do you mean by negotiate? As soon as I tell them, don't they have all the power?

Has anyone been screwed out of money by a public school?

Anyone else have a suggestion? I'm leaning towards giving a month since I don't want to screw the school for the next semester. However, I am still worried about not getting a full check on my last pay day. Any help is appreciated.

This is a "follow your nose" type of deal. Only you can decide.

You signed the contract, the contract says give 60 days notice, so give the 60 days notice.

You are worried about the school screwing you, yet here you are wanting to "screw" the school. Has this school given you any reason to suspect that they will screw you? I've had a few friends who've quit their GEPIK jobs for various reasons, each time they have given their notice and were paid out, everything by the book.

PS. You are aware, that if you give less than 2 months notice, you are breaking the contract, and have effectivly forfeited the 900K "housing" deposit.

Seriously, if you sign a contract which says you must give 60 days notice and you don't give the notice, unless there are extenuating circumstances (i.e. have to rush home to visit sick mother) your word is worth shit. So do the decent thing.

I would say give them notice a week before the new EPIK orientation. It makes no difference to them at that point because they don't get assigned a new teacher from the orientation until a day or two before the orientation.
