Not that I'm American but I'd be happy to yell U-S-A !! Hacksaw Jim Duggan style in Seoul. What are the hired help and afternoon drinkers gonna do. Sick of thinking I have to be quiet-ish in Korean pubs. The main reason would be that Brazil are forever dining out on their days of Pele. They're not world champs, get off the stage.

USA did very well against Italy last WC drawing 1- all in a testy match. Dark horse for a semi-final spot 2010 I reckon.

Depends what you mean by dark horse. If you mean snowballs chance in hell, then maybe. They got a single point in the last world cup. I had a quick look at their squad, and I recognize only a few of their players.

For the US to get to a semi final, they would need a world cup in north america(home team always over performs), a lot of luck, and to discover at least one world class player (Adu to come good?)

Also Brazil have won 2 world cups since Pele hung up his boots. Also world cups held outside Europe tend to be won by south american teams. So they will be the early favorite.

You want a dark horse..go with an African team..maybe Ivory Coast?

Just one of several things that turns me off about soccer/football... so many damn tournaments and so many different teams that the objective, to me, becomes unclear, and the intensity of competition becomes diluted.

If I were to follow soccer, I wouldn't know what to root for.

Well I'll make it clearer for you.

International Tournaments:

World Cup is the big one.
Other ones are regional with European cup being the biggest.

Club Tournaments:

Champions League is the daddy

This competition is fed by and is run at the same time as the major european domestic leagues. Like the world cup it has group stages, and elimination stages.

The European domestic leagues are strictly league systems with no playoff stage. If you would order the leagues in Europe, it would go something like this..

1A English Premier League
1B Spanish La Liga
1C Italian Serie A
..big drop off after those 3..

There are big teams outside those leagues but those three are by far the most prestigious leagues and where most of the best players end up in.

To make it even simpler, you would want to win

1 a world cup
2 the champions league
3 a winners medal from one of those 3 leagues.

Yeah its a tin pot tournament but it is quite a big deal for USA to beat a Spanish team that many have been saying could be one of the greatest of all time. many are seeing it as turning point for USA soccer/football. Spain would win 9/10 times so it is a fluke but its a massive achievment.

I agree. Ivory Coast are 40/1 for the world cup. Could be interesting.
