So I guess whenever "Anti-English Spectrum" prints rumors, the Chosun Ilbo runs with it and puts it atop their own website.

The "Anti-English Spectrum" said that it found that two teachers---a Canadian and an American---at a Seoul hagwon were accussed of molesting and harassing an elementary school student at a previous hagwon. The story is atop the Chosun Ilbo's website:

http://news.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2009/06/30/2009063001264.html?Dep0=chosunmain&Dep1=news&Dep2=topheadline&Dep3=top

http://briandeutsch.blogspot.com/2009/07/anti-english-spectrum-brings-more-bad.html

Also atop the Chosun Ilbo site now is that nasty Yonhap story we read about earlier in the month via Korea Beat:
http://koreabeat.com/?p=4944

And other stories about sexual predator native speaker English teachers. This type of crap just never stops, does it?

The first line sets the theme

Quote:
"외국어학원 원어민 강사들의 성범죄가 끊이지 않고 있는 가운데, 최근 2명의 원어민 강사가 또 다시 성추행을 일삼다가 적발됐다."

"In the midst of never-ending sex crimes of language hagwons' native-speaker teachers, recently two native speaker teachers have again been exposed indulging in sexual deviancy."

Ok, now, my Korean reading is certainly far from Korean native speaker level, but if that translation "never ending sex crimes" is correct, then my impression of the Chosun Ilbo has really dropped.

Who, exactly, is the "chairman" of that group? What's his job and, more important, what's his background? I wonder how much he'd like to have his every move under scrutiny.

Never-ending? Who are these marathon men.

Some of us need a break at least every half hour in our quest for constant deviant behaviour.

Besides, you have to wash out the gimp suit or it gets stinky.

OP are you outraged at the article or the teachers?

You have me heavily confused here.

For people who work tirelessly harassing foreigners...there are surprisingly few reports on this site or others in which people have been stalked, observed doing drugs, or fired because of these champions of justice. What, if anything, is this guy doing tirelessly if he is not stalking foreigners? Maybe some of us have to stalk him to find out

Um . . . outraged by the article, of course. Since when is it acceptable for a major newspaper to run hate-mongering articles against a minority group based entirely on diatribes from a hate group?

The Korea Beat translation of the OP is here, by the way:

Smee, thanks for that link! Did you also notice the nationality of the accused in that article? Yep, Tanzania is not one of the "Big Seven" countries for hiring English teachers.

What a joke of an article and "newspaper." If they get news of sexual predators from these kind of sources, I can't help but question any sort of report they do.

This is the sort of stuff that makes me want to hate this place.

The stories are totally and utterly uncorroborated. If there was an ounce of truth to them tthe police wouldn't hesitate for a second in arresting the foreigners. It's just pure anti-foreigners bullsh!t.

That said their women are more attracted to foreigners, despite the taboo nature of such relationships. We earn good money with no qualifications other than a third level degree. And there are probably numerous assh0le foreigners giving the rest of us a bad name. Nonetheless, jealousy and anger don't justify such outrageous and spurious claims.
Unless they're true, in which case I say lock the stupid f^ckers up.

Isn't there some government agency that's supposed to monitor newspapers for publishing patently false "information" as news?

Slightly off topic but still related to Yellow Journalism. This was a few years ago, so hopefully someother "long-timer" can help out with a link or some such.

There was an international journalism conference in Seoul a few years back (6-7). At the end of the conference participants were asked to complete a survey or the conference AND of other attendees.

Most foreign journalists described their Korean counterparts in fairly positive terms. Ranking them fairly high in areas such as "hard workin", "having a strong desire to learn", etc... In short, most comments concentrated on an individuals professionalism.

Most Korean journalists described their Foreign counterparts in fairly negative terms. The comments I remember most clearly were "bad smell", "big noses", and "fat". In short, most comments concentrated on an individuals physical characteristics.

I remember laughing my a** off. It was just indicative of the K journalists inability to be professional.

No more so than in most countries, and quite a bit less than in some. If you ask most Korean people you will find that they don't trust their media precisely because of biased articles such as the one being discussed here.
