Like many things, it is illegal, yet nevertheless everywhere. Poker rooms with blacked out windows have popped up all over my neighborhood in the past year..and even the 바다이야기 places are coming back as well.

It would not be a stretch to say that at least 10% of the businesses in my neighborhood..are offering illegal services. This includes the many "coffeeshops" "rest rooms"(휴계실)/ paint thinner for your car tents, poker or otherwise other gambling rooms, tattoo studios, barber shops, "adult" PC rooms, gayobangs...etc.

Thank you.

But what about online poker sites? Is it strictly enforced? Does anyone else play online? If so, where?

you say you've had no problems with pokerstars. Way to go!

It will soon fall victim like the rest now that you've announced it.
I posted to find a live game recently, but it seems we're being watched.

Do a search. It has been posted here many times. I don't really care. I am out of here soon enough.

i wouldnt play on pokerstars, the people playing on that site on average are too damn good to make money off of. Better sites are partypoker or pacific poker. But if you are interested in playing big tournaments or just fun pokerstars is the best site.

Yea, pokerstars without a problem here too.

It's illegal for Koreans to gamble online, and the government describes poker as gambling. However, I think the law is a lot more lax for foreigners. Elky - a very well known professional player - used to live in Seoul, and he certainly played online. So I think maybe they just turn a blind eye.

I also play pokerstars without a problem. However Partypoker doesn't work (is blocked) and other sites I've tried won't accept deposits from my location (even though I use a non-Korean credit card). Korean credit cards don't work either.

Regarding Elky, when he lived in Korea, he wasn't a well-known poker player, he was a SC player. I'm sure he played poker on the side, but I doubt it was tacitly endorsed.

So is all gambling illegal in Korea? There's a bike track near where i live that let's you take bets on whos going to win. It's not discreet in the slightest, in fact it's a multi million dollar complex with betting machines and tellers, live commentary, the whole nine yards - not unlike most dog tracks i've been to. I also know of several casinos in Busan and Jeju and there's a Horse race track in Seoul as well, i believe.

are there a number of loop holes in the law or is it just selective interpretation of the law?

I heard with regard to some of the casinos that you need to have a foreign passport to enter, I don't know if this is true, but if that is the case then surely this would extend to online gambling as well.

Gambling is illegal for Koreans. As a foreigner you can gamble at Coex at the Seven Luck. They give you all the free booze and food you want too! Usually when we go there (once in a blue moon), we play on the roulette table, making minimal bets and downing free jack and cokes. You can usually get a good 8 drinks in you and walk away with 50 bucks if you are lucky enough (an hour and a half maybe), and then slip into the dining area for a free meal of your choice. Not a bad deal if you ask me, getting paid to drink and eat. Afterwards you can waste your winnings in Itaewon or Hongdae on more booze!

I lay pokerstars here no probs.

But be aware that if you sign up to them whilst over here (my case - I'd never used them in my home country) then you cannot use your home credit cards to deposit as they were not issued in the country you signed up in.

You can however just get a mate back home to send you money through their ps account or use Western Union (the 30,000 won fee is a bit annopying though as this is kinda like paying an extremely high rake on your money...)

South Korea seems like it's culture is heavily influenced by Christianity and the morality of its bible scripture.

No just they're culture is different.

A friend who is Korean told me that gambling is banned because Koreans

A. Get so angry when they lose they are convinced they're being cheated and a lot of violence has occured because of this character trait in the past.

B. They cannot stop and after a losing streak will sell their cars, computers - anything - untill they are destitute.

Apparently if you go to that place (think it's Gangwando) where they have a casino for Koreans - the surrounding areas are full of pawn shops and used car lots selling the items gamblers have sold to chase their money back... Pretty desolate I've heard....

Sure the same problems exist back home though...
