Going alone sucks. I hated Philippines. Being a white guy you won't stop getting harassed for money from the moment you step off the plane. If you go with a group, it's probably like paradise. But going alone is really scary. |
In my limited time, I experienced that to a certain extent. Walking around in Ermita/Malate in Manila was the worst. I'm thinking that if I avoid that city, I'd avoid that problem.
Baguio I had a weird experience when I got off the long-distance bus. It was raining extremely hard and I didn't have an umbrella. Some young man kept looking at me. I stayed in shelter for a good 5 minutes, but got so uncomfortable with his stares, I just made a sprint through the rain to where I was going. I was running at an extremely fast pace just not to get wet. At one point I suddenly stopped and he was almost immediately right behind me. Kind of freaked me out. I went directly into a restaurant and had dinner that exact moment. When I walked out 20 minutes later made sure he was nowhere around. Not sure what that was all about. |

I am going for a couple of weeks on a spur of the moment trip to the Phillipines, it is supposed to include Mindora and Boracay. Okay, all of you seasoned travelers- I need advice fast. What I want: good beaches, some laid back nightlife, snorkeling, and a quiet place to sleep at night. I don't mind a bit of a scene, but when its time to sleep, someone rolfing in the room is not my style.
Also, should I take my U.S. dollars, or get pesos here or at the airport? |
It sounds like a lot of fun. Are you going on a package tour? Did you go through a travel agent? Did you get a decent price? I noticed that the flights were inexpensive to Manilla, but wasn't sure about getting around. That's always an issue for me, single female, safety first.

We went to the Philippines in November and had absolutely NO problems. The people were friendly and helpful, they spoke English, and they didn't harrass us.
We went to Dumaguette in the Visayas and it was pretty nice. I would say the main reason most people go to Dumaguette is for snorkeling/scuba diving. There is an awesome island (30 min away) called Apo Island and it was AMAZING! There's a nature reserve around the island and it's some of the best in the Philippines. We had a great time.
I would say that our resort on the edge of Dumaguette was really relaxing, but it wasn't very scenic. The locals all said Siquihor (sorry for the spelling) was much prettier, and Borocay was good, too.
You can catch a supercat boat to other islands, ie from Dumaguette to Cebu or Siquihor. Our flight (round trip) from Manila to Dumaguette was $70. Buy your tickets for traveling in the Philippines when you are there. It's much cheaper to just call the domestic airlines than even their prices on the Internet.
While staying in Manila, I really recommend Makati city. It should cost less than 250 pesos to get there from the airport. It was beautiful! Lots of green, nice buildings, very clean, etc. The shopping was great and there were lots of classy international restaurants to choose from.
Have a good time!

Just out of curiosity, desultude, how much did you end up paying out for your plane ticket? |

A freind just got back from Boracay.
He said ther were "packs of Koreans" running around the island LOL!!!
He said there were boats lining the shore with Taiwanese and Koreans landing on the island.
He told me he`d never go back.
I recommend you go during rainy season (July or so) to avoid these huge crowds and max 5 days on Boracay.
Otherwise, very boring. |

$600,000 because it was such a late decision.
The reason I decided to go was that a colleague is going, and it sounded like fun. I already had reservations and a mental commitment to Vietnam. But I really just wanted a chill vacation. This will be my first beachy fun vacation, I always "travel". It seems so decadent and touristy to just go sprawl on a beach. Lets hear it fo decadence. |

Okay, I have one more question: Can you use U.S. electical cords in the Phillipines? The plugs look the same (a graph online) but the current is something like "125". The U.S. is 110. Korean is 220. I have never heard of "125". |

Is Philipines for Christmas any good, or way too crowded/expensive? |

Always good.
I went in Jan/Feb and it was great - Palawan
Went once to Boracay in the rainy season (july) and it was also great. rained a few times during the afternoons but not too bad. sun always comes back out.
everythings cheaper in the rainy season too
Philippines isn't like Thailand - it's not yet over run with tourists. Soemthing I really dislike about traveling in Thailand
definitely fewer tourists at the beaches than Thai |

So, if I want to stay somewhere on the beach with the main objectives of getting a tan and trying out some water sports like windsurfing and maybe diving, anyone have any suggestions for places that won't break the bank? Nightlife is a distant secondary concern to being by a nice beach. |

Two places I'd to back to in the PI - Boracay and Palawan. |
