Will Food Leftovers Be Trashed?

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2009/07/117_47844.html

Reuse of Side Dishes Subject to Sanctions From Today

By Kwon Mee-yoo
Staff Reporter

Lee Sun-young, a 26-year-old office worker, rarely eats side dishes at small restaurants or bars. That's because she knows how some restaurant owners ``recycle'' them.

``I once worked part time at a local bar and was shocked that the owner mixed leftover food and served them to other customers. It was so disgusting,'' Lee said. ``After watching that, I couldn't eat side dishes at restaurants, especially small ones. It was more surprising that the restaurant owner didn't feel a sense of guilt.''

From Friday, restaurants reserving leftovers to customers will be suspended from business or slapped with fines of up to 30 million won.

Recycling of leftover food is not only unsanitary but the key cause of food poisoning, especially in summer, experts say.

``Customers' saliva is transferred to leftover foods and it could cause food poisoning,'' Lee Kuem-Ju of Kyung Hee East-West Neo Medical Center.

Me? Wylies99? How do I feel about this story? Disgusting! Any apologists actually in Korea care to rebut?

Ha ha.

I think it's pretty gross, but I just try and forget about it. I know it's happening at our school too. Hopefully the kimchi sterilizes itself!

I wonder how they'll enforce this. Rather, I wonder IF they'll enforce this. Better still, they won't enforce this.

If everyone ate their kimchi then this wouldn't have to happen now would it!

Yeah. In the US, unless the bread comes to you in one solid loaf, do NOT eat it. We do the same thing.

In the U.S., I'm much more afraid of the vindictive waiter or cook. In Korea, I feel pretty free to complain at will. However, I would never do that in America because of the spitting, eye drops, urine, pubic hairs, etc. put in the food.

Found the links to the pubic hair cases: Laughing

http://www.propeller.com/story/2008/08/04/man-who-found-pubic-hair-in-steak-sues-restaurant/

http://www.wtov9.com/news/18949108/detail.html

Targeting police officers to put pubic hairs into their food. . . not a smart idea. I love the newsite's "graphic" pictures. My lord those guys have long pubic hairs.

Never order the kimchi-jjigae. Also, stay away from the potato salad banchan.

Why do they hate you so much? Is it that personal? Did you "forget" that tipping exists in the USA? Rolling Eyes

Just be polite and tip and you'll avoid these problems.

So, you're saying that to avoid becoming seriously ill due to some irresponsible waiter/waitress, we have to pay their wages too? I thought it was the employers' responsibility to pay their employees fair and honest wages?

Mandatory tipping is about as ludicrous as labor unions. (oops; did I just write that? Embarassed )

Perhaps an area where the U.S. can learn something. Labor unions are nothing more than organized blackmail. One of the reasons why U.S. manufacturing went to the dumps.

Heh. Laughing I tipped a dude $120 last week. So no, when I get good service I am more than generous.

But I also know from friends that work in the industry, that if I were to order something off menu or some modification or complain that the order came out wrong, I will run the risk of retaliation.

BTW, since you are willing to go so off topic Wylies, Captain Corea essentially called you out in that Marmot's thread you started. Are you ever going to give any evidence that Brendan Carr called ALL teachers drug users? Or did you lie about that? Is that why the thread was deleted? We want answers Wylies! Twisted Evil
