The thing with the guy in the wheelchair was the kind of blooper that most of us could probably make on a bad day. And it should be stated that Biden recovered pretty well from the gaffe, going straight into self-deprecating apologies like the seasoned pol he is.
It is true that Biden has been a bit of a jackass in the war on drugs. I believe he's the guy who wants to shut down raves, actually. However, while libertarians might enjoy pointing this out, it's not the kind of thing you're gonna hear from most Republicans, since they're even more hardassed than he is.
I remember when the media was making an issue out of the fact that Sarah Palin couldn't name one Supreme Court decision besides Roe V. Wade. What no one appeared to notice was that when Biden was asked to name one, he mentioned a decision that struck down a domestic-violence bill that he himself had written. So, it really wasn't all that impressive that he would know that decision.
Still, I get a kick out of old Joe. He's got that sort of baby-kissin', slap-ya-on-the-back old-style politico thing about him. |

One of Andrew Sullivan's readers predicts...

| I'm calling it now--she is not actually going to step down on July 25. Her speech was produced in a fit of pique and now, given the reaction, she's going to stay on. That's my theory. |
Not the only place I've heard this theory floated either, though I think that reversing herself at this point would be about the worst thing she could do.

I just want her to go away. But I'm afraid that won't happen since she has an $11m book deal to milk. So the speech circuit calls. She can't do that as a sitting governor. Hell, she may not even have enough material to put in a book. But with a year or so on the speaker's tour, some cutesy stories may magically appear.
Money, my dears, is her higher calling. You can take that one to the bank.
What I'm finding more interesting is the comparison between Sanford's refusal to quit, and Palin's bailing. Love struck Mark knows that home and hearth is where the money is. Sarah throws her own political career aside, but with aspirations to do it better from 'outside', for the same. That's what that boils down to imho. Follow the money. |

My point only that some people think Ol' Joe is above reproach, at least when compared to Gov. Palin. Gov. Palin is clueless while Ol' Joe ain't? Hmmm... I've walked into plenty of DD's and 7-11's without seeing one single Indian, or person of Indian descent. I don't talk about hanging out at neighborhood bars that have been closed for more than 20 years and as someone mentioned earlier, he got caught red handed plagiarizing. Fitting that you mention the office of the 'drug czar', because how many czars is this administration up to now? 11? 12? I can't remember as I've lost count.
Update: Just found out. The Obama Administration's got 31 czars currently, more than Imperial Russia ever had.

As far as Gov. Palin is concerned, I'm not a citizen of the state of Alaska so I can only speculate. I trust her to have made the best decision for herself. Maybe she really did want to spend more time with her family away from politics and the media that pillory anything they don't understand outside the Potomac River. Maybe she saw other opportunities outside the governor's mansion giving speeches and writing books. Who knows? It's none of my business as far as I am concerned.
But if she does decide to make a run for president, I mean ever, this will prove to be one of the stupidest decisions ever made. |

I suppose it's possible that she's deliberately giving out mixed signals, as a trial balloon to see how people react to the idea of her continuing in politics. |
In the normal course of things a pol will send up a trial balloon before making an irrevocable move, but as you say, this could be deliberate--a kind of 'do you really love me' or 'beg me to stay' strategy. Some blogger or other quoted HS Thompson, my least favorite political writer of all time, "When the going gets weird, the weird get going" or something to that effect.
By the end of the week we should have polls from every company in the business to see how this is playing in Dubuque and Peoria. My prediction: Bailin' Palin will still have her base; her numbers can't go any lower than they already are among Democrats; Independents will give new meaning to the word 'precipitous'. |

You are welcome to it. It's an absolutely perfect word, don't you think? I came across it a couple of months ago on the internet in reference to Republicans, but is not restricted to them. I expect it to whine its way into the dictionary soon. |

That's no strategy, that's her narcissistic personality disorder. Either way, the spotlight is still all her's. |

You may be right--and definitely right about attention. I can't decide just how much of her public performances are consciously planned. Several pundits have said she's the best natural, instinctive politician in the GOP, but I don't really buy it. She definitely knows how to garner media attention though.
PS: Thanks for mentioning the narcissism. I'd thought about bringing it up, but didn't want to look up how to spell it. |
