I have been out of the west for 15 years now, and out of elementary school for more than 20 years... so I have no idea what goes on in School back in the west...

but for the past 15 years teaching on and off here, I have seen countless Korean boys punching Girls, boarder line beating them up.
from ages as young as 5 to 16years old...

I am trying to remember if we ever did that kind of stuff back home when I was in school.. and I must say.. NO for the life of me I can't recall ever seeing a boy punching a girl in the head!
I never once saw a boy hit a girl in all my school days.. maybe it was just my school..
but boys where I came from always knew that boys don't hit girls..
it was kind of like brainwashed into our heads..
sure we faught each other all the time.. but girls.. NEVER...

but In Korea I see it all so often.. I'm just wondering if it happens all so often back home too, as I have been out of school for long now..

so, is it the norm back home too??

Don't know where you're originally from, but I'll just go from the Canadian experience. Probably not that different from the other western countries in terms of this.

Not really. It's more girl on girl or guy on guy violence. It's still a big no-no with the whole boys hitting girls thing.

Mind you, some of the violence that goes on with girls is just out of this world and for the more ridiculous and stupid reasons.

I think the only really western guy hitting girl action is younger kids like 3 yo up to 7yo. They have not learned how to control anger and the social message of guys do not hit girls. And usually it would be just a one punch pop to the head or shoudler, a fall down and crying.

In Korea at times I do see the crumbling of chivalrous behavior.

I'd be more concerned about the girls hitting the guys. At those ages the girls are usually bigger.

This one girl came and told me in Korean, "Teacher, Randy hit me and my leg hurts."

I looked at her leg and didn't see any blood, only a scratch and said, "You're all right, there's no blood."

She proceeded to go tell on me to the VP who was standing in the hall.

I think I've been in Korea too long because if they ain't bleeding, their fine.

Are you kidding me? lol...
At my PS if one of the girls gets hit by a boy she nails him back at least twice as hard, and if I don't stop it right away 4 times outta 5 the boy is the one coming to me saying "Teacher she hit me!" lol...

Well, after a year here in K-land it still bothers me to see kids in the elementary school, daily, punching one another. But they have no other role models for peace...their national motto is "fighting"...what are we to expect? The parents and teachers hit the kids so the kids are going to hit one another. Until the violence stops at the top we are looking at future generations of fighters, which is what they are training them to be with the mandatory military stuff here in Korea.

Slapping with two fingers on the forearms seems to be popular this summer.

When I was in juniour high there was an all-out war between the guys and girls. Not sure what caused it but I can remember it going back as far as grade 2. When we were in grade 2 the girls liked to go out at break and see how many guys they could kick..some of us were fast, others..not so lucky. At one point the principal had to have a special meeting with all the girls. In Junior high it got worse. It wasn't helped by a gym teacher who would always make the teams guys against girls and usually dodge ball..we had one guy who was an ape for an 8th grader. He could put a ball through a wall.
We basically had girls assaulting guys, and guys afraid to defend themselves (also not helped by the fact that our class was 23 girls and 6 guys). Girls would jump guys in the hallway, drag them into the locker room and scratch them and hit them for awhile or just come up to someone at their locker and kick them in the shins for say 5 minutes cause that is fun. It got worse and the principals again stepped in and separated everyone. I got out of there after grade 9.

i saw a university aged couple playing this on the subway one day. it started out as just a cute game, but as it got more competititve, the guy would really slap the girls wrist really hard. i had a 4th grader do it to me once and it left a red mark for days. im sure that poor girl had bruises. at one point, she was near tears telling him to not do it so hard.

it moved well beyond cute and got uncomfortable for everybody watching really quick.

this has also been something a few of my k-gf's have told me why they dont date korean guys. she said they just see hitting as normal behavior, how their supposed to treat women. damn, i know theres cultural things we wont ever understand, but thats just one really f*cked up part of this culture.

I played that game with some Korean exchange students at a TGIF here in the states. That's one fun game!

I wonder if I am in the same country as you..

because I have been teaching at Seoul Public elementary schools now for 8 years + and at elementary school age (7/8 ~ 12/13y.o.) I usually only see girls (who are much bigger) hitting the boys...

I guess the boys get to pay it back in Middle school when they grow bigger.
