I have heard that most horror stories come from people who secure their job before ever leaving the US. Is it worth the peace of mind to secure the job beforehand, or is it better to fly yourself to Korea and find a job once there?

Seems like this is your first Korean job. The disadvantage of getting your job before even getting here is that you don't know for yourself whether your school/recruiter is talking nonsense. And you don't know what part of the country you like. It might be nicer to come see for yourself what you like here and what you don't like.

and then after finding that job you want, you get to fly all the way back home to try to get a visa!
