I'm planning on canceling my Hana account because it's a terrible bank. I've read good things about both Woori and KEB. For those of you with accounts with either of these banks, what are the perks, and what problems have you had?

I'm looking for a few things in a bank account. One is access to my money. Hana still doesn't offer an international card for foreigners, cuts off my atm card randomly at night, and closes for three days at a time to thwart hackers.

Are there any other banks you'd recommend?

Good for you to ditch Hana.

I use KEB. I was issued an international ATM card when I opened my account. And, the person who helped me setup internet banking (so I can send money to my home account) was very helpful and friendly. I usually go to the Itaewon branch, but I've had positive experiences at all of the KEB branches I've been to.

I haven't used Woori. I can't say they're good or bad.

I second KEB - international debit card, credit card thrown at you, plenty of English speakers at all the branches I've been to and most important - REALLY simple internet banking with overseas remittance taking literally minutes online.

Woori has known to be extremely helpful to the foreigners who wants to open an account with them. I have an account with them and just by showing your ARC and Passport, I was able to get the international debit card (visa check card). I've also set up a money transfer with them where now I can send money oversea at anytime through the ATM.

Only reason I would choose Woori over KEB is that there are about 3 times more Woori branches all over Korea compare to KEB.

Yep, same here. Also Woori has the best all English banking website i've seen so far. I do 99% of my banking now just online.

You could always do both. KEB for your foreign exchange stuff and Woori for your domestic monetary needs.

On a related question, why are the International Debit Cards there associated with Visa? What does Visa have to do with it? They're a credit card company.

Visa is not a credit card company. In fact, most of the bank that issues credit do it independantly from Visa. Visa is a system of financial network. Actual lending of money is done by the financial institute you are applying for your credit card. Visa is a system of network that the financial institutes who are issuing the credit card. Consider Visa is a global network to access the money whether they are of credit or from your checking account.

I have both.

Choose KEB -- any day of the week, and 3 times on weekends.

Woori is from hell. In Korean, "Woori" means "our", as in "our bank.

Let it be known that, as a foreigner, you are not considered part of "we" at Woori. You are treated very differently, and will not get an international bank card, credit card, etc.. Woori was one of the first banks to begin requiring this, and I will never forgive them for it. KEB at least tries to be more service-oriented toward foreigners, and were one of the last holdouts in allowing foreigners cards like this.

I've also had a terrible time getting things like auto-pays cancelled and address changes made at Woori. They say they do them, and never get done.

Honestly, if at all possible, you should look at Standard Charter bank. At least there, you will be treated like a human instead of a non-Korean. You might even get an ATM card you can use outside of Korea.

And you are in what state in the U.S.? I've never heard of a U.S. called South Korea. You went on to explaing what "Woori" means. Do you know what KEB stands for? That's right. KOREAN Exchange Bank. Are you a Korean? Your logic is flawed to begin with. No foreigners are allowed to have Credit card unless you have established a credit in Korea. That means you need to hold a regular job in Korea for at least 2 years. That goes for foreigners as well as any KOREANS.

Banks here used to issue credit cards to public school teachers a few years back. My friends had 'em. Besides, what about international ATM cards, smart-ass? Ask Woori to issue you one of those. As I stated, they were the FIRST bank to go with that trend. Woori doesn't give a shut about you personally, although they will be thrilled to open an account and take your money. And yes, "Woori Bank" means "Our Bank." It's a hell of a lot more personal than some random bank named after a city or country.

Woori bank sucks. Do you work for them? The ONLY reason that I have Woori is because my wife has it. She's Korean. I had opened an account at Woori prior to my marriage because a school asked me to. I would have closed it had it not been for my wife.

And you'll have to tell me why you made the USA comment. Are you a mod sock? If so, you just outed yourself, because I have not told a soul on here that I am in the USA for the moment.

Are you too stupid to understand, "Please bring your ARC and Passport."? It took me total of 10 minutes to make an international ATM card which I've used in Japan and Philippines. I don't work for "woori" and I perfectly understand what "Woori" means. You are putting unnecessary twice to the meaning. I am just baffled by your stupid "Woori" argument.

FYI... I also had an account with Bank of America in the states. I guess you stupid argument applies to BoA as well.

Anyone who got an international check card with Woori, please share with us :

Your Visa status
The month / year you got it
Which branch

I've seriously gotten denied by them for an international card at over 7 branches now in the last 3 years. Go in for other business, ask that just because, they say foreigners can't get it.
