This is a GEPIK directive (according to my CT who heard it from the principal). |
"How interesting. Do you happen to have a copy of the GEPIK directive? If not, don't talk to me about that ever again."
That'd be my response to the coteacher. |

I just emailed Ha-rim Lee (Gepik Coordinator, along with Dain Bae), about this exact thing today. One guy's school was trying to take it out of his vacation days and NOT PAY him for it. Here's what she said, short and sweet:
"His/her school should read the official letter carefully. It's all in there- the 7days is to be 'work at home' (means not to be taken away from the paid vacation)." |

Tell them you changed your flight to Jeju-Do. Enjoy your two weeks in China. Although be careful the Chinese don't lock you up in quarantine. And yes, losing your co-worker face is enough to lose renewal later done the road. |

this suggests/implies the EXISTENCE of an OFFICIAL GEPIK directive.
I know nothing about it and I work for GEPIK and they know I'm flying back stateside.
the only thing said about swine flu at my school has been by ME - when students are hacking and coughing all over the place without lowering their heads and covering up their mouths:
I always tell my co-teacher - these kids are going to give me swine flu!
and when she had a nasty cold I kept joking she had swine flu and should stay away for me. |

Hey,
If anyone is getting jerked around by their school about this matter, and works for Gepik as well, then contact me, either through PM, or through the contact form on my website.
Send me the name of your school, what city you work in, your school's phone number, and explain what they're doing as well. I just had one guy's school situation fixed. I'll get the Regional Coordinators to call your schools, hopefully, and get this sorted out as soon as possible. |

I don't mean to be harsh but exactly what kind of pull does someone who's been here less than 1 year and doesn't speak a "lick of Korean" have?
I have the Regional Coordinator's business card in my wallet (she handed it out to a lot of teachers, it's nothing special), so why wouldn't I call her myself if something funny went down?
On that note, aren't the RC's going to find it funny that one guy is calling on behalf of the other foreigners? I should think they wouldn't discuss personal details without verifying that the person on the other end is who he claims to be. |
This morning my school told me that because of swine flu I would need 7 days quarantine on my return from China for summer break. This would mean cutting my 2 weeks there in half, as they expect me to do this time during the holidays. I have already booked my ticket and am not prepared to change it. Does the school have any right to tell me to cut my holidays to allow for quarantine time. I'm not going to do it, but I was just wondering if anyone knew if the school can insist on this..
If its a public school there is a policy. I asked the POE here in my province and the policy is that a quarantine can not be included in your vacation time.
Won't mention where I am but my school has been good to me, no bullshit. Call the POE and EPIK if you need clarification. |

The consequence is this. You will get FIRED. Maybe not right away but later they can use it against you. My GF missed a plane and missed the first day of class of a new semester. I covered here classes and still months later they used it against her when they wanted to let her go.
Also expect to get money taken away from your pay check. They can be honest and minus a week that you spend sitting at home or they can be real jerks and take away a month. |
Hi,
This depends on whether it is PS or not. Stop spreading paranoia.

Will KTs be going into voluntary quarantine after returning from SE Asia or China? Will they *beep*.

No. They won't be going to SE Asia or China, as they are expected to stay in the country for the safety of the students. This is, of course, a suggestion. One they will all follow. Just as they all canceled their winter vacations abroad because, as civil servants, they were to have respect for the fact that the Korean economy was not doing well, and not spend money abroad.
Do you people even talk to your co-teachers? |

My coteacher canceled her winter trip to Japan, but it was more about the won plummeting and the trip being too expensive rather than "having respect" for the Korean economy by not spending money abroad. That's just ridiculous. |

Some people don't have the Regional Coordinator's business card in their wallets - because their schools didn't let them go to orientation, or because they lost the card, or whatever - so I'm acting as that business card. I'm a Regional Rep for Bucheon, and I'm in somewhat frequent contact with the Coordinators, so I'm forwarding people's complaints to the appropriate Coordinators, or to Harim and Dain. Sure, I'm not doing anything directly, but I'm forwarding people in need of help to those that can help. |

No, they're not.
Just because 95% of the people on these boards have developed some kind of mildly psychotic, passive aggressive, animosity-fueled relationship toward their co-teachers doesn't mean we all engage with our work environment that way. My co-teachers don't feed me bull. They've absolutely no reason to. They were just bitching about the fact that, with this swine flu thing, it now makes a full year they've not been allowed to go abroad.
My co-teachers had it "suggested" to them by the VP, who had it suggested to him by the P, who had it suggested to him by the MOE, that a winter vacation abroad was not a prudent move for a Korean civil servant at that particular time.
The end result was the VP saying to all of the teachers, privately, I know I know, your vacation, but it would make me look bad if you go, and you are under me, so could you do me this favor? Which, of course, no one could say no to. Next thing you know, bam. Everyone's Vietnam vacays are in the can.
Anyway, I can see how life is probably easier if you just walk around assuming everything's a lie and everyone's out to get you (and only you), rather than just building relatively simple, trustworthy relationships with the people around you, who may just be slightly more clued in than you are. Carry on. |

Really, now? Plenty of the Korean teachers at my school took jaunts to China, Japan, the US, and one even toured Russia. Yes, that was this past winter. How'd they manage to do that when they're of a hive mind as you describe? |
