...people start threads with a leading headline and then there is really nothing of substance in the first post?

Still has more substance than your average K-Pop song or TV transmission.

I'm glad you're doing so much to end the trend.

I just hate it when some dude pushes me in the back after we mistakenly walked into each other during rush hour in a packed subway platform as people are exiting the train.

People made an instant semi-circle around the two of us and he said c8 and stared at me with crazy glazed over eyes.

I backstepped into the train cuz I'm a *bleep* / didn't want to fight a Korean in front of 50 other Koreans / was late for class / am a *bleep* / love being pushed in the back and made to stumble forward.

I really hate that, but I'm guessing he was just having a bad day... not worth starting a new thread over but wow.

Venting over. Confused

Usually when such threads are made, the subsequent posts become nothing more substantial and the thread usually dies out.

The life cycle of a thread would be an interesting phenomenon to investigate because it seems that forums have typical patterns formed that occur on a regular basis regardless of the topic. The concepts of "troll" et al have come up from this very act that the OP (OP ironically being another forum-based term) mentioned.

I would not be one to undertake this kind of study because it seems as if it would be extremely tedious and not serve a real purpose. Some might argue that it would enlighten us on an aspect of human conversation, while it would really just be intellectual masturbation on behalf of the researcher who wants to be published in a journal or one who reads such works. The audience would likely be a Cultural Studies major who needs sources for his/her works cited list in a term paper.

Yes, having a thread without a substantial original post can be irritating, but it also may be made in jest, or to relay simple information. If I were to announce that a world-renowned artist were going to perform at some location on some date, it would be a bit ridiculous to make an extensive post. I could simply use a formula like: (Artist or band name), (Venue), (Location), (Date and time). This could easily be relayed in the title alone, but most web filters would not allow only a thread title without a posting. Rather, we should have to post meaningless information or include some kind of artist biography. Also, an unfortunate side effect of these types of announcements are that people respond with very pointless comments, such as "This band sucks" or "Oh yeah? I've been waiting to see them here" or "I used to like their song..." which really offer no meaningful contribution to the knowledge of other readers.

How to resolve this conflict is not beyond the capacity of my own knowledge, but i would rather leave such work to someone else who has far more time on their hands.
