It's been tough so far.... I want to work at a Hagwon in the center of Seoul, preferably Hongdae, Sinchon, Jongno area, starting mid August or September... Any advice? Anyone have any schools they know are good and hiring possibly? PM me please! Cheers. |

I'm in the same boat, competition seems fierce. |

Have you got -
Blonde Hair?
Blue Eyes?
Big Rack?
Nice Looking?
Midwestern Accent?
Female?
Even armed with a BA (Hons) in disco dance studies means that you'll walk into most jobs in the bando - have a Phd in linguistics and are from Pakistan? Hey - you are no match for barbie and her BA in disco dance!
And barbie can pick and choose - if you are not barbie then you are fighting for the crumbs with the rest of the suckas! Welcome to teaching English in South Korea. |

There is fierce competition for those particular areas as a previous poster said.
Therefore, anyplace within a 10 km radius from those locations should be your new criteria. You'll have 100 times more schools to choose from.
Being 10km from there is still only a 13,000 won (roughly) taxi ride back home from those nightlife hotspots. I presume that's why you want to work there.....nightlife.
Don't forget the taxi paradox in Seoul. It can often be harder to get a taxi home at night when you live nearby, cos the driver only wants to pick up someone who lives further afield so he makes more money. So when you say your address he'll shake his head and drive off. Living a few km out means its easier to get a taxi.

Well, hagwons like females - there are no shortage of nice looking females with the midwestern accent working where you want to work.
If you have a midwestern US accent then you may swing it but you are in the middle of the busiest hiring time so it is doubly difficult as you have much more competiton - especially these days with the recession.
I would try Busan if I were you - I reckon you could get a hagwon job by the beach.
Or Gangnam - my favourite part of Seoul and there are loads of hagwons - I would be there like a shot if I had even one of Barbies attributes! |

Which Gu's would you suggest within that 10 KM radius?
@pie eater Yeah I hear good things about Gangnam, Busan is too far from the center of Seoul tho |

I'm having a bit of trouble finding jobs in the central or south central area of Seoul. But then again, I'm trying to find a job that's fewer than eight hours, so I might have myself a long wait. 8-4, 9-5, 10-6? I did 10-6 with my last contract, no thanks! A lot of the after-school positions that I've been seeing want you to already be in Korea. I'm not going to buy a plane ticket then look for jobs in Korea just so that I can qualify for a 1-5 job.
I should change my resume and list that I work on Surprise. It would make my resume stand out at least. My last school liked the fact that I was on there because the kids and parents dig it. But, man, if potential employers actually saw my acting. Well, then I'd be unemployed for a LONG time. |
