If you are going to buy a handphone, don't buy from SK in Itaewon, in my opinion.

I want to trade my current Motorola V730 for one of those semi-new Motorola Moneta phones.

SK Telecom in Itaewon would give me a whopping 30,000 won on a trade for my phone. Also, the Korean I got my phone through must be present. I told them I heard that other SK stores only require a fax and a phone call to the Korean who is co-signer on the phone. But they insisted he must come to the store.

Well, I went to another SK store, by chance, far East near Goedock station, and thier offer was much better. They'd give me 100,000 won for the trade, and I only need a fax and a call from the current co-signer.

Total price was 70,000 less.

Just a note: Shop around! Not all SK stores are alike in price!

I don't understand this I just went in and got my phone and service no problem. I didn't have a Korean it was just me. It is NOT card phone it is regular service like anyone else. I have internet access on my phone and get my bill at home just like at home.

I think it depends on where you go. I didn't have any other documentation except my registration card. So I think it must depend on where you go.

Can someone explain the Korean thought process behind putting stores so close together?

In Icheon's downtown, there are 3 SK stores all within a few blocks of each other. I can actually see all three of them at the same time from one place. Same with Samsung stores, LG stores, Family Marts, etc. Why so many? Don't they end up just competing for business?

I can back this up 100%. First of all to make sure we're talking about that small "SK Telecom" store which is right there on a corner just across the alley from Gecko's Pub as well as that mini super-market which is underneath Gecko's right?

If so.... Yah saying they would only give you 30 for a phone worth 100 sounds very true.

I went in there one time several months back, they had alot of older model phones (i.e. no color screen, only b&w) and they were charging highest prices possible. I bought the cheapest one at 70,000 won for a VERY used phone. I was later talking to an older Korean women a month later who had the exact same phone as me, she said the model is over 3 years old and she paid EXACTLY 100,000 won when she bought it brand new 3 yrs ago. So the guy only knocked off 30,000 won for a 3+ year old b&w screen phone?

Oh yah, also when I was trying to negotiate with the guy salesman he was jerking me around, having me wait 30 minutes straight, dilly-dallying around with other customers, holding me up until 5 mins before closing time at 9pm. Damn spent an hour and a half and he only gave me a 10,000 won discount (from 80 to 70 thou).

Don't get too comfy with that slightly wierd guy manager adjosshi. He definately seems to have not only thin nerves with foreigners but a possible distaste for them. When all the other customers left the store, his speech got a little wierd on me and he started talking about "discrimination" between foreigners and Koreans or some whacky stuff, but of course his english was wierd and just as well I just wanted to get a phone and leave.... But yah he has a sort of "snakish" way of dealing with you.. He wears glasses and has this smug smile.

nobody I know in their right mind even uses that store, except to pay your bills. Go to Yongsan to get a phone, usually do you a real good deal.
